The Minnesota State High School League met Monday morning and approved Football and Volleyball Seasons this fall. They also approved adapted soccer This fall.
Football
The board voted 15-3 in favor of having football this fall. Practice will start September 28 with the first day of competition October 9 or 10.
The season will have six regular-season games with two weeks of section playoffs. As of now, no state tournament. Only 250 fans will be allowed at football games.
Volleyball
The board of directors voted 14-4 to have volleyball this fall. The 11 week season will allow two matches per week with a maximum of 14 matches. Practice will start September 28 and 10 practices will be required before competition. Masks are recommended for players and coaches with an exception for the six players on the court.
October 8 will be the first competition date.
NO fans will be allowed at the volleyball games. KROX will be live video streaming all the Pirate home volleyball games.
Adapted Soccer
The board unanimously voted 17-0 to allow Adapted Soccer to conduct eight fall training sessions. There are two divisions of Adapted Soccer, cognitively impaired and physically impaired.
Miscellaneous
Dr. Bill Roberts spoke to the board and said there isn’t a lot of data available for high school sports. His concern is what it does to the body and in some cases it can do sever damage to the heart. The virus can attack the muscle and the heart is a muscle. Dr. Roberts said there are risks for myocarditis in symptomatic and asymptomatic cases. But he also said the flu can cause myocarditis.
Dr. Roberts also said exercise is good for the mental health of the students and said it is concerning that more kids are attempting and committing suicide.
The MSHSL conducted a survey For the over 500 schools they represent and 394 schools responded. The results are below-
