PIRATE BASEBALL SPLITS A DOUBLEHEADER WITH EGF

The Crookston Pirate Baseball team played a fantastic game to beat the East Grand Forks Green Wave 9-3 in game one, and lost 6-0 in game two of a doubleheader played at Jim Karn Field in Crookston.

GAME ONE-

FIRST INNING-
EGF’s Rylee Hams had a one-out single and stole second base before the next two batters popped out.
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion, and the game was scoreless after the first inning.

SECOND INNING–
Crookston’s Gavyn Hlucny continued his solid pitching as he retired the Green Wave batters in 1-2-3 fashion.
With one out in the bottom of the inning, Hlucny drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and over to third base on a ground out. The next batter struck out, and the game was scoreless after two innings.

THIRD INNING–
Crookston took advantage of EGF control issues on the mound. Jack Doda started the bottom of the inning with a walk and stole second before scoring on an error for a 1-0 lead. Matt Contreras and Carter Coauette reached on back-to-back errors. After a Crookston out, Alex Longoria singled up the middle to score a run. Ethan Boll walked and stole second and third base before scoring on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead. Another run came into score, and Crookston led 4-0. 

FOURTH INNING–
East Grand Forks responded with a run in the top of the inning when Drew Carpenter led off with a triple and scored on a Tanner Nowacki ground out to get within a 4-1 deficit.
Crookston’s Blake Melsa doubled with two outs and was stranded on second base as the next batter flew out to right field. 

FIFTH INNING–
East Grand Forks was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the inning.
Crookston responded with four more runs.  Boll led off with a double, stole third base, and scored on a wild pitch. Widman and Demarais reached on walks, and Doda singled.  Widman scored on an error, Demarais’ courtesy runner scored on a sacrifice bunt, and another run scored on a Coauette singled for an 8-1 lead.

SIXTH INNING–
East Grand Forks led off the inning with a Carpenter double.  After an out, Caleb Schmiedeberg singled, but the next two batters were retired.
Crookston started the bottom of the inning with an Alex Longoria double, and Boll reached on an error. Hlucny was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Widman hit into a fielder’s choice as the Green Wave got the out at home plate.  Bases were still loaded when Demarais hit a fly ball to left field to score a run for a 9-1 lead.

SEVENTH INNING-
East Grand Forks tried for a big rally in the inning.  The first batter struck out, but Jordan Nowacki and Frize had back-to-back singles before a Rylee Hams double to score a run. The next batter was hit by a pitch, and Tanner Nowacki grounded out to allow another run to score, but that would be it for the Green Wave as Crookston held on to win 9-3.

GAME TWO-

FIRST INNING-
The first two EGF batters were retired before Drew Carpenter and Tanner Nowacki walked, and Caleb Schmiedeberg singled to score a run for a 1-0 lead.
Crookston had a great start to the bottom of the inning when Carter Coauette singled, and Blake Melsa was hit by a pitch to give the Pirates runners at first and second base with nobody out.  The next three batters struck out looking, and EGF got out of a jam without giving up a run.

SECOND INNING–
East Grand Forks leadoff batter in the second inning struck out but reached on a passed ball.  After a stolen base and an error, Jace Van Eps scored on a Levi Anderson sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.  After a strike out, Noah Frize walked, Rylee Hams was hit by a pitch, and two runs scored on an error for a 4-0 lead.
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning.

THIRD INNING–
The first two Green Wave batters were retired before the next two batters reached on a walk, and a run scored on an error for a 5-0 lead.
Crookston’s Coauette walked with one out. After an out, Longoria singled, and Boll struck out but reached on a passed ball to load the bases.  The next batter grounded out, and the Pirate threat was over.

FOURTH INNING–
East Grand Forks had runners at first and second with one out and the next two batters were retired.
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning and the Green Wave led 5-0.

FIFTH INNING–
East Grand Forks scored another run in the fifth inning when Hunter Varnson reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored on a Kadan Boespflug single for a 6-0 lead.
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning, and East Grand Forks won the game 6-0 to earn the split.
