PIRATE BOYS BASKETBALL PULLS AWAY TO BEAT FRAZEE

The Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team used several runs and solid defense to beat the Frazee Hornets 68-58 at the Crookston High School gymnasium.

FIRST HALF-
Frazee had the hot hand at the start with a pair of three-pointers. The first one came from Alexander Helmers, and the second was by Asher Blaine for a 6-0 lead one minute into the game. Crookston answered with baskets from Hunter Nicholas and Caden Boike. Frazee took a 12-6 lead before Crookston started to get things going offensively. The Pirates responded with a 13-2 run with the first eight points scored by Tyler Michaelson, Reggie Winjum added three points, and Caden Boike added two for a 19-14 lead with 6:44 left in the half.
Frazee battled back to tie the game at 22. Crookston led 25-24 when Michaelson converted an old-fashioned three-point play, and Boike added four points to cap a 7-0 run to take a 32-24 lead. Frazee ended the half on a 4-0 run, and Crookston took a 32-28 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF-
Crookston’s Nicholas started the second half with a basket before Frazee countered with seven straight points to take a 35-34 lead two minutes into the half. The game was tied at 37 when Jack Everett converted a three-point play for a 40-37 lead. After a Frazee basket, Nicholas answered with a three-point play, and Everett added two free throws for a 45-39 lead. The teams exchanged baskets for the next seven minutes, and Crookston led 58-53. The Pirates’ Isaac Thomforde, Miachelson, Nicholas, and Winjum added two points apiece in an 8-0 run to take a 66-53 lead with 2:34 remaining.
Crookston held on the rest of the way and won the game 68-58.

Crookston improves to 4-10 on the year and will host Barnesville in a Section 8AA matchup on Thursday. Frazee drops to 3-11 on the year.
