PIRATE BOYS SOCCER SHUTOUT BY DETROIT LAKES ON PARENTS/SENIOR DAY

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Soccer team gave up three goals in the first nine minutes and never recovered in a 7-0 loss to the Detroit Lakes Lakers in a conference matchup played at the Crookston High School soccer field on Parents and Senior night.

FIRST HALF –
The Pirates had a case of Deja Vu as Detroit Lakes did the same thing Bemidji did against Crookston.  They scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game to take a 3-0 lead.  The first goal was scored by Noah Meyer, as he scored on a penalty kick five minutes into the game.  Three minutes later, the Lakes Sean St. Claire scored on a cross for a 2-0 lead.  Detroit Lakes didn’t waste any time as they scored another goal less than a minute later and all of a sudden the Lakers led 3-0 with 31 minutes left in the first half.
The Lakers continued to control the play and they took advantage of almost every scoring opportunity they had in the half.   After a 12-minute scoring drought, Detroit Lakes’ Luter Van Offelen scored, and three minutes later, Noah Meyer scored his second goal of the game for a 5-0 lead.  The Pirate defense stiffened up the rest of the half, but with five minutes left the Lakers added another goal for a 6-0 lead, which they took into halftime.  “It was a bad start and tough to recover after you get behind by three goals,” said Pirate Coach Lon Boike. “It is tough because in soccer you can’t call a time out to break up the momentum and they scored a few quick goals.”

SECOND HALF –
Crookston came out and played they are capable after a “nice” halftime talk.  They went back to their normal defensive formation and that seemed to work better as Detroit Lakes outscored the Pirates 1-0 with a goal a little over halfway through the half.  “The past couple of games we switched to a defensive formation that was supposed to be more defensive than what we were doing,” said Coach Boike. “It didn’t work very well so we switched to our old formation in the second half and it worked a lot better.”
Coach Boike was happy that his team came out and played significantly better in the second half.  “
We played like we should have in the first half and played with more intensity, urgency, and played like we are capable.  We had some opportunities to score but couldn’t find the net,” said Coach Boike.

Crookston drops to 0-7 on the year and will host winless East Grand Forks on Thursday, a game you can hear on KROX Radio.  Detroit Lakes improves to 3-5-1 on the year.
