Pirate Boys Soccer Ties Mesabi East

The Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer team scored two goals in the last three-plus minutes of the game to force a 2-2 overtime tie with Mesabi East in a game played in Aurora, Minnesota.
The first half didn’t see a lot of offense with a total of five shots on goal and no goals. Even though there wasn’t any scoring, Crookston was pleased with their play in the scoreless first half. “We played really well in the first half,” said Pirate Coach Don Cox. “We didn’t talk as much as we would like, but we were playing hard and had a good first half.”
Mesabi East Score a goal almost halfway thorugh the second half for a 1-0 lead and eight minutes later they added another goal for a 2-0 lead with less than 15 minutes to play. The prospects of a win were not bright for Crookston, but all that changed when Noah Dragseth found Noah Kiel with a pass and he headed the ball in for the first Pirate goal. “We got a nice through ball across in the air from Noah Dragseth and Noah Kiel got a head on it and scored,” said Coach Cox. “It was a nice pass and a nice play.” A little over a minute later, Crookston scored another goal to tie the game at 2-2. “We had a free kick from Mason LaPlante and Sam Overgaard put a foot on it,” said Coach Cox. “Sam sent it in the air over the keepers head for the goal. It was another nice goal.” Crookston had a couple opportunities in the final minutes of the game, but nothing great and the teams were tied at 2-2 at the end of the regulation, forcing overtime. “We put some pressure on them and had them scrambling,” said Coach Cox. “We had a lot of opportunities in the last minutes, but we couldn’t take advantage with a quality shot.”
In overtime, both teams had one shot on goal and nobody scored forcing the 2-2 tie. “Both sides had a few opportunities, but we couldn’t score,” said Coach Cox. “The ball was hard, the kids were cold and we couldn’t get a good touch so it wasn’t the best conditions.”
Crookston is now 3-9-1 on the year and will host East Grand Forks on Tuesday.
