Thief River Falls couldn’t ask for more balanced scoring than they received tonight as nine different players scored goals to lead the Prowlers to a 9-1 win over the Crookston Pirates in a Section 8A Girl’s Hockey game at the Crookston Sports Center.
Before the Thief River Falls Prowlers took on the Crookston Pirates in a Girl’s Hockey game, the Thief River Falls head coach, Brett Johnson said he was looking for more scoring from his team and not depend on their first line doing the bulk of it! The Thief River Falls girl’s must of heard him as nine Prowlers scored goals to lead them to a 9-1 win over the Pirates in a Section 8A game at the Crookston Sports Center. We should mention that all three of the first-line players scored goals, now totaling 28 between them. The line is centered by Parker Olsonawski and wings of Brynn Hennen and Lila Dalager! Olsonawski and Hennen are from Hallock and part of the cooperative of Hallock and Red Lake Falls, with Thief River Falls being the hub.
FIRST PERIOD
Thief River Falls started strong with a couple of quick goals. Miley Cota was able to knock a puck past Crookston goalie Madi Abrams to give the Prowlers a 1-0 lead. They added another a minute and a half later when Olsonawski tipped a shot by Chloe Barrett to make it 2-0. Then it was Dalager’s turn, and she scored in spectacular fashion. Crookston was on a five on three power play for a full two minutes and with about 30 seconds left in the penalties, the Prowlers Dalager, who scored her 100th career point earlier this season, keeps adding to it when she went pretty much coast to coast, blew into the Crookston zone, beat a defensemen and put the puck past Abrams to make it a 3-0 lead. That led to the Pirates calling a timeout. “We just wanted the girls to get their heads straight,” said Crookston head coach Reed Olson, “It was a disappointing start for us, and we just wanted to settle them down.” Thief River Falls would add a fourth goal late in the period when freshman defenseman Rowan Kennett scored on an unassisted goal as she shot the puck toward the Pirate ne,t which was knocked down and a scramble in front of the Crookston net and squirted out to the left side and Kennett tucked it in to make it a 4-0 lead after one period.
SECOND PERIOD
With Thief River Falls having the offensive advantage again in the second period, Abrams and the Pirates were able to keep the puck out of their net. Then the Prowlers struck three times quickly to make it a 7-0 game. First, sophomore Ella Breiland showcased her speed, bursting in on Abrams and taking a shot that Abrams saved, but the rebound went right back to Breiland, who potted it, and it was 5-0.
52 seconds later, Charleigh Hamre came in on Abrams to her right side and went top shelf to make it 6-0 and two and a half minutes after that, Brynn Hennen snuck a shot through the five hole to make it 7-0 Prowlers after two periods of play. Thief River Falls outshot Crookston 12-6 in the period and 27-14 thus far in the game.
THIRD PERIOD
Thief River Falls led 7-0, so the period started with running time throughout. Crookston continued to have trouble gaining any offensive zone time, as they have a habit of crossing the red line and dumping the puck into the Prowler zone. Then they change five players on the fly, which gives the Prowlers time to get out of their zone easily, and they claim a lot of offensive zone time. Halle Seeger would score first in the final period when she slid one in after a scramble in front of the Crookston goal, and it was 8-0. Thief River Falls has some speed of their own to neutralize Crookston’s leading goal scorer, Adley Vigness, and they held her in check until halfway through the period when the sophomore defenseman took a feed from Emma LaPlante, sending her into the Prowlers zone, and a crisp, hard shot beat Carr to get Crookston on the board, but trailing 8-1. Less than two minutes later, fourth line player, Aubrey Payment in her first shift of the game scored from Addi Bienek, both fourth line players to finish it off a 9-1 win for the visiting Thief River Falls Prowlers.
Thief River Falls makes it a sweep of their two games with Crookston winning to start the season 3-1 in Thief River Falls. The Prowlers improve to 12-4 on the season, and it was a big Section 8A win for them. They will play at Detroit Lakes on Thursday and at Fergus Falls on Friday. Crookston falls to 4-12-0 and will have another Section 8A game tomorrow night against East Grand Forks with the game being played at the Kim Braaten Rink in Mayville, N.D. as Mayville is a co-op member of the Crookston team as well as Sacred Heart.
