Pirate Girl’s Soccer ties Melrose in final game of regular season

The Crookston Pirate Girls Soccer team battled and played the Melrose Dutchmen to a 1-1 tie in a Section 8A matchup in Melrose in the regular season finale.

FIRST HALF
Melrose had the first quality scoring opportunity early in the half, and Crookston goalie Naomi Johnson made a save. Melrose controlled play for the first 15 to 20 minutes and had a few more shots on goal. “For the first time this year we started slow,” said Pirate Coach Sarah Reese. “We were a half step off after a long and early bus ride,” Crookston started to pick up the offensive pressure and started to get several shots on goal. At the 33rd minute of the first half, Maddie Harbott had a free kick from about 25 yards out. Harbott had a great kick and the Melrose goalie bobbled the ball and it went in the goal to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead with less than seven minutes left in the half. “They were clogging the middle so we started using the outside better and got some shots.”
Five minutes later, the Pirates had a misplay of the ball, and Melrose took advantage with a goal on the left side of the net to tie the game at 1-1 with less than two minutes remaining in the half, and that is how the first half ended with a 1-1 tie.

SECOND HALF –
The second half was similar to the first half. The play was about 50/50, as Crookston had some good offensive pressure. Melrose countered with some pressure, but both defenses came up with nice stops. When each team had a shot on goal, both goaltenders came up with big saves. “It was back and forth, and we played some pretty good defense,” said Coach Reese. Neither team was able to find the net and the game ended in a 1-1 tie, the second tie in a row for Crookston. “Naomi Johnson was incredible in goal. She made a diving save and had some big saves,” said Coach Reese. “Miryah Epema had a good game, and Maddie Harbott played center-mid and forward. She created several scoring opportunities.”

Crookston ends the regular season at 2-8-2 on the season and will play in the Section 8A Girls Soccer tournament quarterfinals on Thursday, October 10. The seeds for the tournament will be released on Sunday.
