Pirate Girls Swimmers Finish 3rd At Pentathlon Meet

The Crookston Pirates finished third out of seven teams at the Detroit Lakes Pentathlon meet at the Detroit Lakes Aquatic Center.  Detroit Lakes won the event easily with 545 points, doubling the runner-up Fergus Falls’ 209.5 points.  Crookston had 108.
Crookston’s Thea Oman was the top Pirate and finished fourth place overall with four top 11 finishes, which is even more impressive when every event had over 100 girls competing.  Thea had a third-place finish in the 50 Breaststroke, a fourth place in the 100 IM, fifth place in the 50 freestyle, eighth place in the 50 Backstroke and 11th place in the 50 Butterfly.  “Thea had a really good meet,” said Crookston head coach Marley Melbye. “She started out with the 100-fly and cut almost one second there and that just continued throughout the day. She finished top-ten in almost all of her races. She really swam well today, looking solid for the first meet of the year.”
Madison Hoiland was the Pirates next best finish with a 14th place finish in the 50 Breastroke and Elizabeth Erdman finished 14th and 15th in the 50 backstroke and the 50 breaststroke respectively.  Fallon Johnson also impressed coach Melbye with marked improvement in the 100-IM. “She cut 13-seconds in her 100-IM which is a phenomenal place to start for the year,” expressed Melbye. “She’s really improved and is working to be the best teammate she can.” Melbye also noted strong showings from several other Pirate swimmers including Madison Hoiland who took 14thplace in the 50-breaststroke. “Madison Hoiland had a good day. She cut over one second off her 100-breaststroke and really looks technically sound in the water. The girls really swam well and weren’t intimidated by the size and depth of the other teams. They were able to get behind that block and truly just know that they have to do what they can do. They really swam hard.
The Pirates return to the pool on Thursday competing in the Fosston-Bagley Tri-Angular in Fosston at 5 PM.
