Pirate Girls Tennis Falls 4-3 to Moorhead

The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team won three of the four singles matches, but they weren’t able to get a win in the doubles and Moorhead beat the Pirates 4-3 in a dual played in Moorhead.
Crookston had wins at first singles with Hayden Winjum winning 6-1, 7-5. “Hayden was dominate in the first set,” said Pirate Coach Mike Geffre. “She made a few uncharacteristic errors in the second set, but found a way to win.” Crookston’s other wins came at second singles with Catherine Tiedemann winning in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 10-6) and Halle Winjum won a tight 7-5, 7-5 match at fourth singles. “It was a good win for Cat to win the third set tie-breaker and she kept playing,” said Coach Geffre. “Halle made her opponent mad by returning every shot so that frustrated her opponent.”
The Pirates started the day slow, but picked up their play as the match progressed. “We didn’t play too bad. I was pretty angry after the first set. We weren’t playing with much enthusiasm and in the second set we played better,” said Coach Geffre. ‘I don’t think we played as well as we have in the previous matches, so that was a little frustrating, but we picked up our play as the match went along.”
Moorhead has an upperclassman dominated team this year and it showed against the younger Pirates. “Moorhead is a good team this year and is a very mature, especially at doubles,” said Coach Geffre. “The rain stayed away so that was nice and they have a beautiful facility at their middle school so that was nice. Every player we brought (Varsity and Junior Varsity) was able to play in one spot so that was nice.”
Crookston will travel to Thief River Falls for a dual on Tuesday.
