Pirate Girls Tennis Finished 4th In Carla Johnson Memorial Tourney

The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team had one champion, one-third place, and two fourth-place finishes on their way to a fourth-place finish in the eight-team Carla Johnson Memorial Invitational tournament held at the Crookston High School, Highland, and Schuster Park tennis courts throughout Crookston.
Hibbing won the team title, edging Moorhead by one point.
“We saw some of the younger kids and how they do with some seventh, eighth and ninth graders playing and we had some nice efforts from them,” said Pirate Coach Mike Geffre. “The upperclassman had some performances with Hayden Winjum winning the championship at first singles
Hayden Winjum, a freshman, won the first singles by winning the championship match 7-6 (7-5 in the tiebreaker) and 7-5 in a hard-fought victory. “That was huge,” said Coach Geffre. “That was her first time playing at that level and she played some very good tennis.”
The first doubles team of Catherine Tiedemann and Emma Borowicz won their first match, lost their second and finished the day with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory in the third-place match.  “The girls had some very good competition,” said Coach Geffre. “The girls played well and their only loss was to a very good New London-Spicer team, so they had a great day.”
The fourth doubles team of Macy Fee and Emma Gunderson went 2-1 on the day with a loss in the first round before they won their last two matches for a consolation championship.  Emma Osborn, a freshman, and Halle Winjum, a seventh grader, finished fourth place and that is what the coaches were hoping to see.  “It was nice to have a seventh and eighth grader win a consolation championship,” said Coach Geffre. “We have some good young players and they will be pushing some of our upperclassman the rest of the season.  We are seeing the younger kids and how they perform at the varsity level and that will give us some options depending on who we play.”
