The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team lost 5-2 to the Moorhead Spuds and lost to Thief River Falls Prowlers 5-2 in a triangular at the Crookston High School Tennis courts.
Crookston vs Moorhead –
Moorhead won all four singles matches and Crookston won two of the three doubles matches as the Spuds beat the Pirates 5-2 in the first dual of the triangular. Crookston won the first doubles match with Emma Borowicz and Emma Osborn winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. “You have two kids that are similar ages and play basketball together and they really compete hard,” said Pirate Coach Mike Geffre. “Neither one of those two take losing lightly and they are athletes that compete hard.” The second doubles team of Catherine Tiedemann and Hannah Street won their match in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 for the second team win. “That was a nice win for us,” said Coach Geffre. “That was a tough doubles team to beat and to win the third set 10-4 was nice and a good win for the girls.”
Crookston lost two of the singles matches in three sets with Hayden Winjum falling 10-6 in her third set tie-breaker and Eden Haller losing 10-8 in her third set. “Eden played hard and had a chance and Hayden played hard and was right there,” said Coach Geffre. “We are trying to get all of the kids to understand that every point is important and they have to play well and play smart. We have to find a way to turn around some of the tie-breakers. We are close and we haven’t found a way to win the close matches yet. When you get chances to win you have to take advantage of them and we still need to learn how to do that.”
Crookston will host Thief River Falls at 5:00 p.m.

Crookston vs Thief River Falls
Crookston lost to Thief River Falls 6-1 last week, but they played much better the second time around and lost 5-2 with three third set losses in the match.
Winning for Crookston was Catherine Tiedemann at first singles with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 hard-fought victory. Emma Borowicz won her second singles match in another hard-fought victory 4-6, 6-2, 10-4. “Emma turned it around after a tough loss in the first set and she never quit and that was great to see,” said Pirate Coach Mike Geffre. “Catherine had a great match against a very good opponent and it was nice to see her battle until the end.”
The Pirates had three third set losses with Hannah Street losing a battle, 6-0, 4-6, 10-7. The first doubles team of Emma Osborn and Hayden Winjum lost 4-6, 6-3, 12-10 and the second doubles team of Elysa Christensen and Eden Haller lost 1-6, 7-6, 10-3. “We definitely closed the gap from where we were last week when we kind of got it handed to us last week,” said Coach Geffre. “We end up losing three three-set matches, so we could have won the match, but it didn’t turn out in our favor. We saw some improvement from the first match in the day to the second match. I thought we competed much better and had more of a warrior mentality.”
Crookston drops to 4-12 in duals and will travel to East Grand Forks on Friday.
