Girls –
Four first-place finishes led the way for Crookston. Breanna Kressin provided Crookston’s first gold medal winning the 100-meter hurdles with a 16.74-second finish. “That’s really been fun to watch,” explained Crookston head coach Amy Boll. “Ever since she started recovering from that misfortune that she had. Breanna has some things she wants to work on as we progress into the season. Breanna still had a really good performance today. She’s just getting ready for the sub-section meet. She wants to refine her time a little bit.”
Emma Borowicz clinched the sweep atop the podium for the Pirates in the hurdles by winning the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.4 seconds. “This year, Emma Borowicz has been very focused and driven,” added Boll. “She’s such a strong athlete to have on the team. She had another outstanding performance in four events today.”
Katherine Geist continued her dominance in distance races this year taking both the 1600 and 3200-meter races with times of 5:22.45 and 11:28.21 respectively. “Katherine, again, is a very strong competitor,” said Boll. “She had really good times today and is a really nice, young lady to have on the team.”
In the 4×800 relay, Thea Oman, Anke Weirsma, Hailey Spivey, and Hayden Winjum took second place with a time of 10:20.7. “Our 4×800 relay team really started out our meet with a good performance,” noted Boll. “They’re all very strong runners, and it was really fun to watch them run.”
Emma Borowicz was Crookston’s lone pole vaulter to clear a height, clearing 9-07 feet to claim second place.
Breanna Kressin ran the 300 hurdles in 49.66 finishing behind only Emma Borowicz.
Hayden Winjum continued to improve in the triple jump taking second place jumping 33-01 feet. “Hayden had an outstanding day today,” said Boll. “She triple jumped, she long jumped, she ran the 4×800 and the 800. She really pushed herself today.”
Winjum went on to complete her busy finishing in third in the 800 meters with a 2:35.39 finish.
Jada Dillabough also contributed to Crookston’s top finishes by taking third place in the shot put with a throw of 34-09 feet and third place in the discus with a throw of 91-09 feet. “All the girls did very good,” summarized Boll. “We had a lot of personal bests in this meet. The cards just didn’t fall where we would’ve liked them. I’m very happy with how they performed and how they finished the race.”
Boys –
The Pirate Boys were led by a first-place finish from their 4×100 relay team. Brady Wisk, Jacob Brunelle, Easton Tangquist, and Noah Kiel combined for a time of 47.26 seconds to take first place in the field. “The 4×100 relay team did a very nice job today,” said Crookston head coach Wayne Folkers.
The 4×800 relay team of Andrew MacGregor, Cam Weiland, Jaden Lubarski, and Ben Brantner finished in 9:13.33 to take second place. “We’ve got about six kids we can rotate through (the 4×800 relay team),” explained Folkers. “We’re just kind of playing with it, and now that true team is done we can work on where we’re going to place those kids for section and sub-section.”
Sam Sanchez launched the shot put 45-06.5 feet to take second place in the event. “I was over watching him, and he’s really starting to throw well,” said Sanchez. “We’re really hoping to get a few more feet out of him, and he is too. He’s going to push for the sub-section and section later on.”
Noah Kiel continued his strong day with a second place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.66. Kiel followed it up with another second-place finish running the 200-meter in 23.73 seconds. “(Noah Kiel) had a really good 100-meter race and 200-meter race. He’s just a good sprinter for us and was part of that 4×100 relay team as well.”
Crookston wrapped up its top three finishes with a third-place finish in the 4×200 relay after Brady Wisk, Jacob Brunelle, Easton Tangquist, and Sam Overgaard finished in 1:40.65. “This group of kids has really come a long way,” noted Folkers. “I’ve said this before that I really didn’t know about my relays, but they’re starting to come together. It’s going to be fun watching them here in the last couple of weeks.”
Crookston returns to the track on Friday when the Pirates travel to Warren to compete in the Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Meet beginning at 4:00 p.m.
