The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team started slow and continued to struggle putting together a consistant set as the Northome/Kelliher Mustangs won the match 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-16) in Northome.
FIRST SET
Northome/Kelliher jumped out to an 8-1 lead to start the match with three kills and two of them from Charli Hallstrom. Crookston answered with two straight points on Jayde Uttermack and Madi Abrams kills to get within an 8-3 deficit. The teams battled back and forth with the Mustangs leading 10-5. The Mustangs scored five more points with two kills from Kylee Binkley and three Crookston errors for a 15-5 lead. Crookston picked up their play the rest of the set as each team scored 10 points apiece, and the Pirates had kills from Uttermark, Rilynn Aubol, and Abigail Bruley, but the Mustangs’ early lead was too much to recover from, and Northome/Kelliher won 25-15.
SECOND SET
The set was tied at 2 and 3 before NK’s Josee Lindley had a kill and Crookston had an attack error. The teams battled back and forth, and the Mustangs led 10-7. NK went on an 8-1 run to take an 18-8 lead. The Mustangs led 23-12 when Crookston’s Bruley had a kill, and the Mustangs had an attack go out of bounds to get within a 23-14 deficit. NK scored the next two points on a Crookston service error and a Mustang kill for a 25-14 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
THIRD SET
NK had a great start to the third set, jumping out to a 7-1 lead while taking advantage of four Pirate errors. Crookston didn’t go down without a fight, scoring three points on Mustang errors and trailing 7-4. A while later, Crookston’s Aubol had a kill to get the Pirates within a 13-9 deficit. After an NK kill, Crookston’s Morgan Boll and Uttermark had kills to get within a 14-11 deficit. The Mustangs scored the next five points to build a 19-11 lead and the Pirates couldn’t recover as Northome/Kelliher won the set 25-16 to win the match 3-0.
Crookston drops to 1-18 on the year and will host Warren-Alvarado-Oslo on Tuesday. Northome/Kelliher improves to 11-8 on the year.
