PIRATE WRESTLING SPLITS DUALS WITH GRAND FORKS SCHOOLS

The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team lost to Grand Forks Central 45-24 in the first match and came back to beat Grand Forks Red River 48-30 in the Border Battle at the Grafton High School Gymnasium in Grafton, North Dakota.  The four teams used to be East Grand Forks, Crookston, and the two Grand Forks schools, but East Grand Forks dropped the program and Grafton took their spot.   Crookston was without one of their top wrestlers and one of the top wrestlers in the state, #6 ranked Lukas Meier, due to an injury he suffered in the Wahpeton tournament last weekend.

Grand Forks Central match –
In North Dakota, they have a random draw for the weight the match will start and 120 pounds was the starting point for the match.  GFC won the first match by pin, but Zach Brown answered with an 8-2 win at 126 pounds.  “It was a good match and was close after the first period and it was a match that you have to be patient and make sure you keep good positioning and he was able to do that,” said Coach Hanson. “He got a nice takedown and was able to build a nice lead and it was a good win for us.”  Crookston gave up six more points at 132 when they didn’t have anybody to fill the weight and after a loss by pin at 138 and a 7-3 loss at 145 pounds, GFC led 21-4.  Ethan Boll stopped the GFC run when he won by a 5-1 decision at 152 pounds.  “The opponent that he wrestled finished second at Wahpeton last weekend (Ethan finished third) and we didn’t get a chance to meet him there,” said Coach Hanson. “Ethan had a hard-fought match and he deserved the win.  He is a very strong, quick and athletic wrestler and is impressive as an eighth grader.”  Crookston lost by pin at 160 and 170 and lost by a forfeit at 182.  Crookston had their first winning streak of the evening starting with a win at 195 pounds when Damian Hodgson won a 2-0 battle.  “It was a huge win for Damian,” said Coach Hanson. “He has wrestled him many times throughout his career and lost to him at Wahpeton so for him to grind out a hard-fought win was big.”  Hodgson’s win was followed with a win at 220 pounds when Blake Fee had a pin with two seconds left in the first period for the first win of his career in his third match.  “It was just awesome and I knew if he kept working hard his time would come and when you get in a dual situation it is really exciting,” said Coach Hanson. “He was able to get a takedown early and get a half nelson and ended up in a roll situation and came out on top and earned the fall and his teammates were very excited for him and as coaches, we are happy to see him progress so far and we are happy for him.”    Crookston didn’t have anybody at heavyweight and forfeited the match, but Ethan Bowman was solid in a 9-1 victory at 106 and Jake Erickson wrapped up the match with an impressive 15-2 victory at 113. “I really like how Ethan wrestled, especially late getting the two points late to get the major decision and some bonus points,” said Coach Hanson. “Jake had a solid performance and it was a good test and I am really happy for him to pick up his first varsity win.” Even with the strong finish, the Pirates were too far behind and lost 45-24.  “We had good efforts by Hunter Knutson who wrestled well against the runner-up from the Wahpeton tournament and kept it to a decision, Nolan Dans had the Wahpeton champ and was leading early and Cade Coauette built up a lead in the first period so that was nice to see, we just have to work on finishing,” said Coach Hanson. “It was a good effort by the guys against a very good Grand Forks Central team.”   Crookston dropped to 0-1 on the year in duals, while Grand Forks Central improved to 3-1 on the year.

Grand Forks Red River –
The match started at 126 pounds and Zach Brown received a win by forfeit and Crookston led 6-0.  Red River won the next three matches for an 18-6 lead.  Ethan Boll stopped the Pirate losing streak with a pin in the second period and Cade Coauette received a forfeit win to tie the match at 18. “Ethan wrestled another solid match and that was a nice win for him,” said Coach Hanson. “It was nice to see Cade get the forfeit win after he wrestled well in the first match.  It was good to get the match tied up at that point.”  Crookston lost the next two matches before Damian Hodgson won his second match of the night with a pin in the first period and the Pirates earned three more forfeit victories to take a 42-30 lead with one match remaining.  “It was nice to see the senior captain (Hodgson) go out and get the pin,” said Coach Hanson. “We thought Damian had the chance to put the nail in the coffin with a win with the forfeits coming up.”  The final match was Nolan Dans at 120 pounds and he came away with an impressive win by pin 40 seconds into his match and Crookston won the dual 48-30.  “It was a battle in the middle of the lineup where they had their core and they were light at the top and bottom of their line up so we had to stick with them in the middle and we would be just fine in the dual,” said Coach Hanson. “It was great to see Cade Deleon almost get his first win.  He has an explosive double-leg takedown and got that early and racked up a pretty good lead and that should help build his confidence moving forward.  We feel good picking up the first win and we look to build on it going into the weekend.”
Crookston improves to 1-1 in duals on the year and they will host the Rodd Olson Invitational tournament at the Crookston High School gymnasium on Saturday.  Grand Forks Red River drops to 1-3.
