POLICE ISSUE A “GOOD” TICKET TO CROOKSTON YOUTH

Your child might come home with a ticket this summer!  But don’t worry; this is a “good” ticket explains Crookston Police Chief Paul Biermaier.  “It’s a campaign sponsored by AAA, Dairy Queen, the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association, the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association encouraging kids to wear a helmet when they are on a bike, scooter, using in-line skates or a skateboard.  If they get caught by an officer with their helmet, we’ll give them a citation that’s good for a small ice cream cone at the Dairy Queen.”

Safe Kids Minnesota also sponsors the program.  Biermaier said brain injuries are preventable.  “Some of the reasons wearing a helmet is so important is that kids who suffer brain injuries can die,” said Biermaier. “Wearing a helmet can decrease brain injuries by 88 percent, so it’s pretty significant.  Even if the child or person doesn’t die a brain injury can affect their walking, talking, ability to think.  We want to make sure that the parents are buying helmets that the kids like so maybe have them pick one out.  And make sure that they are in line with the standards from the Consumer Products Safety Commission.  If the child picks it out, they are more apt to wear it.  Let’s get the kids wearing the helmets and our guys, if they are not on their way to a call or something else will stop and have a conversation with the kids to give them an ice cream cone citation.”

Also, please explain to your child there is a limited number of “tickets,” and depending on what an officer is doing at any particular moment he will not always be able to stop and issue a ticket.

The Crookston Police Department would like to thank our local Dairy Queen for again participating in the program.  If you have any questions, please contact the Crookston Police Department at 281-3111.
