The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team had six individuals competing in the Section 8A Individual tennis tournament at Courts Plus in Fargo, North Dakota on Tuesday and Reggie Winjum was the only Pirate alive for the second day and finished third place in singles.

SINGLES –
Reggie Winjum earned the #3 seed and played #14 seed Max Splonskowski of Detroit Lakes. Winjum was dominant in a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
In the second round, Winjum took on #11 seed Riley Thorfinnson of Minnewaska Area, who upset #4 seed Maddax Happel of Perham in the first round. Winjum was impressive again as he cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory to advance to the section semi-finals.
Winjum ran into a very good Jett Cornelius of Thief River Falls in the semi-finals and lost 6-0, 6-0.
Winjum played Aaden Wavra of East Grand Forks in the third-place match. Reggie won a thrilling first set 7-6 and won the tie-breaker 7-1 to take the first set. In the second set, Winjum rolled to a 6-1 victory in the second set.
Unfortunately for Winjum, there wasn’t a true second match and the junior finished third place.
Jack Everett received the #12 seed and took on #5 seed Aaden Wavra of East Grand Forks in the first round. Everett came out strong and won the first set 6-4. Wavra won the second set 6-4, and the third set was another back-and-forth battle, but Wavra came away with a 7-5 victory to win the match, and Everett was eliminated.
DOUBLES
Crookston’s Gunner Groven and Grant Funk received the 7th seed and took on #10 seed Coleman Davis and Jameson Dragt of New London Spicer in the first round. Groven and Funk dominated the first set 6-1, but lost the second set 6-4. In the third set, the Crookston duo bounced back to win 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Groven and Funk lost to the #2 seed Tenzin Dahl and Marshall Kopp of Minnewaska. Dahl and Kopp won the first set 6-0, and the Crookston duo battled in the second set but came up short in a 7-5 loss and were eliminated.
Hudson Rick and Sam Widseth received the 11th seed and beat the #6 seed Vaughn Hanson and Isaac Palmer of New London-Spicer 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the second round.
Hudson and Widseth took on #3 seed Nick Buboltz and Max Mercil of Detroit Lakes, lost 6-2 and 6-2, and were eliminated.
