The Sacred Heart Eagle Boys Basketball team used a big second-half run to beat the East Grand Forks Green Wave 63-58 in a game played at Sacred Heart High School.
FIRST HALF-
The two teams started off trading three-pointers before Josiah Sundby made a three to give the Eagles a 6-4 lead. East Grand Fork’s Chase Lindgren made a lay-up to tie it up, and Austin Rusling scored a two-pointer to take an 8-6 lead. Sacred Heart responded with a three from Sundby to retake the lead 9-8.
East Grand Fork’s Lindgren forced an and-one and completed the three-point play with the free throw. Josiah Sundby scored a floater to tie the game at 11-11, and Parker Erickson made a jumper to give Sacred Heart a 13-11 lead. East Grand Fork’s Rusling made a three-pointer to retake the lead 14-13.
The teams traded two-pointers 6:30 into the half before East Grand Forks went on an 11-0 run, including a three-pointer from Carson McDonald and Lindgren, to take a 27-15 lead. Sacred Heart took a timeout and responded with a 16-2 run over the next four minutes of game time. Erickson hit a step-back three, and Sundby hit a floater before Mike Gapp scored a two-pointer to cap off the run and give the Eagles a 31-29 lead.
The two teams traded lay-ups before East Grand Forks went on a 6-0 run, including a three-pointer from McDonald with under a minute left in the half. Sacred Heart’s Josiah Sundby hit a buzzer-beating three to end the half, and the teams went into the break with East Grand Forks ahead 39-36.
SECOND HALF –
Sacred Heart began the second half with Greg Downs attempting the Eagles’ first free throw of the game. Downs made them both to make the score 39-38 Green Wave. After the teams traded two-pointers, Erickson made a free throw for the Eagles, which tied the game at 41-41. 3:00 into the half, Josiah Sundby made two free throws to give Sacred Heart the lead 43-41.
East Grand Forks retook the lead with a Drew Carpenter and-one four minutes into the half, but Sacred Heart retook the lead with an Issac Sundby floater a minute later. This started an 11-0 run for the Eagles, including an Isaac Sundby three-pointer and a Gapp fadeaway jumper, which gave Sacred Heart a 54-44 lead with eight minutes remaining.
The game was back and forth for the next couple of minutes before Isaac Ortiz hit a three-pointer and a free throw with 5:25 left in the game to give the Eagles a 60-48 lead. East Grand Forks responded with an 8-0 run, including a McDonald three-pointer and a successful Rusling and-one to make the score 60-56 with 2:44 left in the game. The next minute was scoreless before Gapp hit a floater for Sacred Heart to give them a 62-56 lead with under two minutes remaining.
Zachary Jeuch hit a lay-up with 1:30 left to make it 62-58, but Sacred Heart continued to play good defense, and those were the last points the Green Wave scored. Josiah Sundby made a free throw with 16 seconds left, and Sacred Heart won the game by a score of 63-58.
Sacred Heart improves to 5-0 on the season. East Grand Forks falls to 3-2.
