The #6 ranked Crookston Pirate Girl’s Tennis team continued to play great tennis as they beat Detroit Lakes and Wadena-Deer Creek by 5-2 scores at the Detroit Lakes triangular on Friday afternoon. “We played two good teams, with nice girls and it was fun to play today,” said Pirate Coach Sue Tiedemann.
CROOKSTON VS DETROIT LAKES –
The two matches were both closer than the 5-2 score indicated as Crookston won a three-set match at first singles in the Detroit Lakes match when Emma Osborn got behind early with a 6-3 loss in the first set, but she battled back to win the second set 6-2 and won a hard-fought third set 10-7 to earn the win. “She came back nicely and that was a good match for Emma,” said Pirate Coach Sue Tiedemann. “She showed that she can come from behind and win and we like to see that.”
Brekken Tull continues to play some solid tennis as she won her second singles match 6-3, 6-2. “That was a nice win for Brekken moving up to second singles,” said Coach Tiedemann.
Isabelle Smith won a hard-fought 7-6 first set before cruising to a 6-1 win in the second set to get a victory at third singles. “She came back and finished it off nicely,” said Coach Tiedemann.
The first doubles team was a sister duo with Hayden and Halle Winjum cruising to a 6-0, 6-4 victory. “They played well and looked real good in the first set and tried some things in the second set,” said Coach Tiedemann.
The third doubles team Hannah Lindemoen and Addie Fee won 6-3, 6-2 to complete the five wins. “They played well and Hannah plays well with whoever we put her with and she showed that again today. All the girls played well.”

Crookston took on a tough Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverine team and won the match 5-2 to complete the sweep of the triangular. Halle Winjum won her second singles match 6-2, 6-2. “You can put Halle anywhere, singles or doubles, and she plays well. Not many people are going to beat her at second singles,” said Coach Tiedemann.
Isabelle Smith won again, this time at fourth singles as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory. “Isabelle has a lot of confidence right now, in a nice way, and is playing well,” said Coach Tiedemann.
Emma Osborn and Emma Gunderson coasted to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at first doubles. “They had a nice first set and it was 2-2 in the second set and they rolled the rest of the way,” said Coach Tiedemann.
The second doubles team of Halle Bruggeman and Kailey Clauson won at second doubles. “They came out strong and were communicating well,” said Coach Tiedemann.
The third doubles team was the fifth victory for the Pirates with Hannah Lindemoen and Morgan Nelson picking up the win. “Hannah plays well with Morgan, she plays well with Addie Fee, and anybody else she plays with. We have a deep team and so many girls that can play at the varsity level.”
Crookston improves to 8-1 on the year and will play Osakis, Alexandria, and Detroit Lakes on Saturday at the Alexandria Quadrangular.
