The Section 8A Girls Hockey coaches conducted the seeding meeting Monday morning and almost everything went as planned except the three and four seeds. Warroad and Crookston were 1 and 2, East Grand Forks received the third seed after splitting with Thief River Falls during the season, but won the second meeting 3-1 on January 31. EGF also beat Crookston once while TRF lost both games to Crookston.
Crookston will play the winner of East Grand Forks and International Falls on Saturday, February 12 at East Grand Forks at 6:00 p.m.
The seeds and tournament schedule are below.
1. Warroad
2. Crookston

Thursday – February 17
Section 8A Tournament – Championship at East Grand Forks
If Crookston is playing, we will broadcast it on KROX Radio and the KROX livestream.
On Saturday, Crookston will, I am 99.9 percent sure, take on East Grand Forks for the fourth time this season. Both teams won once and they tied once so they are 1-1-1 in the three games. The first three didn’t mean much, but the fourth and final meeting this season will be for the rights to play Warroad in the championship.
What does Crookston have to do to advance to its first section championship since the 2010-11 seasaon. Guess who was on that team? Current Head Coach Emily Meyer!!! Coincidence? I think not!!
Other members of the 2010-11 team were Amber Trostad, Ashton Larson, Lexi Hanson, Claire Conati, Maria Bravo, Abby Parr, Madison Crane, Lizzy Awender, Sidney Erickson, Rachel Biermaier, Shannon Kaiser (played at UND), Jessica Broekmeier, Erin Barnes-Olson, Erica Allrich, Gabi Ostgaard, Riley Erickson, Hayley Epema, Mandi Persson, Caitlin Wahouske, Tayler Epema, Rachel Kanten, Sophie Lien, Kailey Biermaier, Leah Dufault, Brianna Breiland, Kaitlin Spivey, Oksana Paverud, Alina Noyes, and Natasha Skala.
1. They need to stay out of the penalty box first and foremost.
2. Play like they are capable (like when they played against Roseau and Fergus Falls)
3. Get solid goaltending and defensive play
4. Don’t let East Grand Fork’s physical play get to them
5. When they have a quality scoring chance, they need to score.
6. Be loose, focused, and enjoy playoff hockey
We will have the Crookston girls hockey games on the radio and on the KROX video stream!
The 2010-11 team is pictured below –

The Section 8A Wrestling TEAM tournament will start on Tuesday with the top four teams hosting a dual in their home gym. Here is how I see the seeding going. The top seed is pretty easy, after that it will be interesting-
1-United North Central (should be unanimous #1)
2-BGMR (beat Crookston and Frazee, but lost to Fosston-Bagley and Mahnomen-Waubun. I honestly have no idea how 2 through four will go! Good luck to the coaches on figuring that out.
3-Frazee (beat Crookston, but lost to BGMR)
4-Crookston (lost to BGMR, Frazee and UNC, but beat everybody else below them)
5-Fosston-Bagley
6-Barnesville
7-Mahnomen-Waubun
8-Fertile-Beltrami
The seeding meeting will take place on Friday so we will know then where everybody will be. The first round of the Section 8A team tournament is on Tuesday, February 15 with the top four seeds hosting the bottom four seeds. The Section 8A semi-finals and championship will be held at Fertile on Friday at 6:00 (semi’s) and 7:30 p.m. (Championship).
KROX will carry all the Pirate matches and we will live stream the first round if they are at home.

The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team is sitting in second place in the Section 8AA QRF rankings, behind Fergus Falls, and wants to finish the season strong to keep that spot. Crookston has won 14 in a row and is currently 17-2 on the season. They will have two big games coming up this week. On Thursday, they will travel to the North Dakota Class B defending champ and currently #4 ranked Grafton Spoilers. While it won’t count in the QRF, it will be a big game against one of the top teams on their schedule. On Saturday, the big game will be hosting the Perham Yellowjackets. Perham is tied for third with Hawley right now so whoever wins the game on Saturday will have the advantage for the second seed. It will be a big game and a good one for both teams.
Crookston also has Pelican Rapids, Barnesville, and Stephen-Argyle on the schedule as tough opponents left on the schedule. If they win both games this week I would bet they would run the table and for sure get the second seed. But, that is a big if with two quality teams coming up.

Congratulations to Sacred Heart Boys Basketball’s Sam Gapp on scoring the 1,000th point of his career this week!

Speaking of milestones, keep an eye out for Crosby-Ironton EIGHTH grader Tori Oehrlein. She scored the 1,000th point of her career this week. That’s right, 1000 points in under two years!
Towards the end of January, she had a game where she scored 43 points, grabbed 20 rebounds, and has had other crazy games like that including making 10 of 14 three-pointers in a game. She has received an offer from the Gophers, Marquette, and other schools already.

The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team swept the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) weekly honors as Ben Thoma (Sr., C/3B, Clearbrook,) was named the NSIC Player of the Week, while Jake Dykhoff (Jr., RHP, Wadena) was selected as the NSIC Pitcher of the Week. The weekly honor factored in games played on Saturday, February 5 and Sunday, February 6.
Thoma hit .300 in two wins against Northwestern Oklahoma State University Sunday. He blasted three home runs with five RBIs, and five runs scored in the victories over the Rangers. Thoma boasted a 1.564 OPS and a 1.200 slugging percentage in the victories. Thoma also had a .364 on-base percentage.
Dykhoff tossed five innings of shutout ball in a win over Northwestern Oklahoma State. He struck out eight and walked two of the 19 batters he faced. He held the opponent to a .118 batting average after allowing just two hits with a 0.80 WHIP.
The Golden Eagles are 2-1 heading into a six-game series with the University of Hawai’i-Hilo in Hilo, Hawai’i.

JOKES
Donald Trump is walking out of the White House and heading toward his limo when an assassin steps forward and aims a gun.
A secret service agent, new on the job, shouts, “Mickey Mouse!”
This startles the would-be assassin, and he is captured.
Later, the secret service agent’s supervisor takes him aside and asks,
“What in the hell made you shout Mickey Mouse?”
Blushing, the agent replies, “I got nervous. I meant to shout, “Donald duck!”

A wealthy man died and went to heaven. He was met at the Pearly Gates by Saint Peter who led him down the streets of gold. They passed mansion after mansion until they came to the very end of the street. Saint Peter stopped the rich man in front of a little shack.“This belongs to you,” said Saint Peter.“Why do I get this ugly thing when there are so many mansions I could live in?” the man demanded.“We did the best we could with the money you sent us!” Saint Peter replied.

So I got drunk and embarrassed her at the same time.
