We are officially in the final rush of the winter sports season. The Section 8A Girls Hockey championship will be held in Crookston on Thursday night and if Warroad doesn’t win, it would be a shock, even in Thief River Falls. The Warriors are very good, but it is safe to say most at the Crookston Sports Center will be cheering for Thief River Falls, which is the case every year the games aren’t played in Warroad.
Section Wrestling team champions will be crowned this weekend and the Section hockey tournaments will begin next week! Believe it or not, it is that time of year.

The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team’s season came to an end with a first-round loss at Detroit Lakes. The season wasn’t as successful as they were hoping and losing Kylie Meier before the season started, losing Kenzie Epema early in the season obviously hurt the Pirates. With a young team they knew it was going to be a challenging season and they don’t lose a senior on the varsity team. So all the varsity players are coming back, they could have some more girls coming over from Mayville and they will add some eighth graders that have had some success on the 12U team. Will they be able to compete with Warroad next year? It will be tough to close a 16 goal gap in one year, but they will have a chance to close the gap next year and possibly be competitive with them in two years. But….the girls have to put in the time.
Again, the girls won’t make the biggest improvement on the ice in the offseason. It will be done in the weight room, dryland and the best part of that….it won’t cost any money to get better. They don’t need to play all spring and summer to get better….they need to LIFT WEIGHTS, dryland, shoot pucks and weighted pucks and get bigger, faster and stronger.
Did I say they need to lift weights?
The future is much brighter for Pirate Girls Hockey and it will be fun to see the improvement in the next two or three years.

The Crookston Pirate Boys Hockey team will host the Detroit Lakes Lakers on Thursday, February 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the first round of the Section 8A Boys Hockey tournament after the seedings were released Wednesday morning. Crookston and Detroit Lakes will meet in the first round for the fourth straight year. East Grand Forks received the top seed after beating Thief River Falls on Tuesday night. The Section 8A Wrestling tournament seeding went pretty much as expected as the Frazee Hornets earned the top spot in the tournament that will be held at the Ralph Englestad Arena in Thief River Falls on Saturday.
Crookston will get a rematch with the Fosston-Bagley Brawlers. The two teams met in Crookston on January 17 and Fosston-Bagley won the match 40-37.

Last week was National Signing Day for high school student-athletes, but East Grand Forks Green Wave Football coach Ryan Kasowski (a former college football player) did something pretty cool for his program. East Grand Forks Football had 31 eighth graders sign letters of intent to play football for THE East Grand Forks Green Wave football program. The 31 kids making the jump from Junior High to “THE Program” is exciting and Coach Kasowski has come up with a unique and fun way for the kids to feel their decision to play football is a big-time decision. The EGF Football Twitter account posted pictures of all 31 kids signing their intent to play football for the Green Wave and it took off like wildfire, giving the kids some publicity.
I asked Coach Kasowski to tell us more about the idea of signing day.
Thank you, Chris! I appreciate the coverage. Every year I go over to the middle school and visit with them about continuing/joining football in high school. It’s a good way of introducing myself and also to give them the start dates and weight lifting info. This year I thought it would be cool to have the kids do a signing day the same day the colleges do theirs. I want the kids to know how important football is in EGF and how much they matter to our program! The big message was that joining our football family is a big deal and by signing, you are showing that you are “ALL IN” on being apart of it! The kids were really excited about it and I think the Twitter aspect made it similar to the colleges introducing their new players. We signed 31 kids to play next year and I know that with the response from the signing day that this will be something I do every year!
The one thing a lot of parents, coaches, and administrators might forget that it’s important to make the kids feel like their decision to play each sport is a big deal. Because being part of a program is a big deal and an ideology that has been lost over the last 20 years. It used to be that kids showed up and did the work and worked hard because that was EXPECTED of them by their parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, etc. That isn’t the case anymore. I mean, teachers are passing kids with 40 and 50 percent scores, allowing homework to be turned in a month late with no penalties – seriously. (And we wonder why kids aren’t working as hard – there are no repercussions for being lazy anymore.) Finding new and exciting ways to make the kids feel playing for the varsity/J.V. program is a big deal is a key with the kids these days and kudos to East Grand Forks football for finding a way!

A big congratulations to former East Grand Forks Green Wave Hockey coach/Activities Director and an all-around great guy, Jim Scanlan on winning his 82nd game as Bemidji State Women’s Hockey coach this past weekend with a win over #9 ranked Ohio State. Jim has been working hard and getting a lot of Northwest Minnesota girls on the team and has built a solid program at Bemidji State, considering he doesn’t have all the resources like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio State, etc, he has done a tremendous job in Bemidji.

East Grand Forks Green Wave hockey thanked longtime hockey official, George Weber, at their game on Tuesday evening with an autographed Green Wave jersey. George is one of the better hockey officials in the area and is a class act. Congrats to George on his upcoming retirement and he will be missed after his 40-plus years of officiating.

The MSHSL Region 8A committee also unanimously (12-0) approved moving the first three rounds of the Section 8A Volleyball tournament to the high seed.
We talked with Jim Weinzerl (Region 8A Executive Secretary) and he said the move was primarily because Bemidji State (one of the two locations) wasn’t available on the Friday night (or Saturday) because the BSU Volleyball team had home matches the two days. Coaches and Activity Directors made the decision to have the top seed host the first three rounds and play the third round on Friday (as scheduled) instead of having to play back-to-back days on Monday and Tuesday.

Welcome
- Board President Bonnie Spohn Schmaltz called the meeting to order.
- Board member Todd Waterbury gave the reflection.
- MSHSL Music Consultant Carl Lipke presented former board member and Edina music educator Bill Webb with the NFHS Fine Arts Minnesota Music Educator of the Year Award. Bill will now be considered for national recognition.
- An agenda addition, Discussion Item 10C (Soccer Coaches Letter), was approved. Amended agenda was approved.

Lobbyist Report
- Lobbyist Roger Aronson shared a history of the MSHSL sales tax exemption. In 2017, the State Legislature re-authorized this exemption with a 10-year sunset clause. The MSHSL is seeking to eliminate the sunset date on this legislation. The exemption has produced $7.5 million for member schools since 2006.
Legal Counsel Report
- Legal Counsel Kevin Beck provided updates on three pending cases.
Executive Director’s Report
- Executive Director Erich Martens shared his appreciation for school administrators for their efforts, flexibility, and leadership during recent weather challenges.
- Shared that the consolation series of the girls’ hockey state tournament will be played at TRIA Rink at Treasure Island Center in downtown St. Paul.
- In January, attended the winter meetings of state association executive directors in New York.
- The League participated in the MSBA Conference in Minneapolis in January. In addition to sharing MSHSL informational items in a booth on the convention floor, League staff also presented to a large group of Board Members.
- Along with other League Staff members, attended the Martin Luther King, Jr, breakfast event at the Minneapolis Armory.
- Attended the second Principals Advisory Committee meeting of the school year, a gathering that provided valuable feedback on many initiatives being addressed by the League.
- League Staff and Board Members have been invited by leadership of the MNIAAA to participate in listening sessions at their State Conference in March.
Executive Committee Report
- Reviewed the board’s policy on out-of-state travel and competition. The current policy limits travel to 600 miles roundtrip and the requirement that member schools participate against teams that are members of their respective state associations.
- The committee reviewed the process that will be used in determining the appropriate class for each team in League activities. The Appeals Committee will use a rubric based on the categories that have been submitted to member schools. The Executive Committee will be the oversight body for the appeals decisions.
- An Executive Committee meeting has been called for Friday, March 15 at Williams Arena during the girls’ basketball state tournament. The purpose of the gathering is to review classification appeals.
- A special board meeting has been called for Friday, March 22 at Target Center during the boys’ basketball state tournament to review final section placements.
- Approved NFHS cross country and track & field uniform modifications on undergarments.
- The Executive Committee report was approved.
Action Items
- Approved increases in membership and activity fees, beginning with the 2019-20 school year through the 2023-24 school year. The amounts of the approved dues: 2019-20 ($110 membership, $110 per activity); 2020-21 ($120 for each); 2021-22 ($130 for each); 2022-23 ($140 for each); 2023-24 ($150 for each).
- Approved a golf tournament advancement policy.
- Approved a Music Advisory Committee recommendation to clarify the definition of an accompaniment.
Discussion Items
- Executive Director Erich Martens shared that the proposed amendments for boys’ volleyball, girls wrestling and the summer waiver will not be advanced to the Representative Assembly because they did not reach the approval required by nine sections.
- Walt Weaver, Jenny Kilkelly and Krista Fleming shared a presentation to urge the Board to promote the sanction of boys’ volleyball.
- Board member Russ Reetz made a motion to have the Board consider promoting boys’ volleyball forward to the Representative Assembly for its consideration. The motion passed on a voice vote.
- A workshop session has been called for Wednesday, April 3 to continue work and discussion on the Activity Advisory Committee proposals. These proposals are due on February 15th and will be distributed to Board Members and Region Committees at that time.
- The Board discussed a letter sent by a group of soccer coaches to consider the reclassification of the two classes of soccer for the upcoming season. No action was taken regarding the request from this group of coaches. The Board suggested that this group of coaches work with the leadership of the Soccer Coaches Association.

- The Eligibility Committee minutes were approved as submitted.
Audit/Finance Committee
- The financial statements for November and December were approved.
- Recommended the approval of membership and activity dues increase to the full board.
Marketing and Communications Committee
- League Staff will continue to examine the production costs and the need for a state tournament program in its current format, as well as the sales and distribution of the program. Following that review, League Staff will convene with the committee to formulate a recommendation to the full board. Staff provided updates on other League publications.
- League Staff provided sponsorship updates.
- The committee passed a motion to create a Media Advisory Committee.
Education and Leadership Committee
- The committee provided updates on Coaches Education, Audit of MN Head Coaches Course, School Board Training requirement, Parent Training Tools, the MN AD Cohort and officiating initiatives.

The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball program announced the signing of a pair of Shelby Dunbar (MH, 6-0, Fertile/Fertile-Beltrami H.S.) and Bailey Mulcahy (S/DS/Fertile-Beltrami H.S.) to National Letters of Intent.
Dunbar and Mulcahy are the first two signees for Head Coach Sarah Rauen’s 2019 signing class. “We are very excited to add Bailey and Shelby to the Golden Eagle Volleyball family, and are excited to see the contributions they make to our program, our campus and our community, Rauen said. “Both have had very successful high school careers, and we are proud to add two of the top area athletes to our team. Bailey and Shelby will add depth and competitiveness to our team, and we can’t wait to see them in a Golden Eagle uniform.”
Dunbar and Mulcahy show a desire for Coach Rauen and the program to find the area’s top student-athletes. The pair were both multi-sport athlete just down the road from Crookston, Minn., at Fertile-Beltrami High School.
The signees add to a roster that returns 12 student-athletes from the 2018 squad. Minnesota Crookston graduated only Callie Schapekahm (Sr., MH, Eagan, Minn.) from last season’s team. Rauen has put together a roster of some of the top regional talent. UMC currently has 10 student-athletes from the state of Minnesota, with the signings of Dunbar and Mulcahy.
The Golden Eagles posted a 4-24 (2-17 NSIC) mark in 2018, but look poised to improve with a more experienced squad returning to the fray in 2019. Minnesota Crookston was very young last season. The 2019 roster will include four seniors, four juniors, three sophomores, and three freshmen.
Bailey Mulcahy (S/DS, 5-5, Fertile, Minn./Fertile-Beltrami H.S.)
Mulcahy was an All-Pine to Prairie Conference pick for Fertile-Beltrami High School as a senior…She earned Minnesota Academic All-State for volleyball…In addition, Mulcahy earned the Triple A Award…She was named Fertile-Beltrami High School’s Most Dedicated in 2018…Mulcahy also earned All-Pine to Prairie Conference honors for volleyball in 2017…She also received the Fertile-Beltrami High School Coaches Award in 2015…Mulcahy was an all-conference pick for basketball following the 2017-18 season…She was an honorable mention all-conference pick for basketball in 2016…Mulcahy also played softball for Fertile-Beltrami High School.
She is the daughter of Vaughn and Renee Mulcahy. Her mother Renee Mulcahy works at Minnesota Crookston. She plans to major in criminal justice. She earned high honor roll in high school. Mulcahy was a member of the National Honor Society.
Shelby Dunbar (MH, 6-0, Fertile, Minn./Fertile-Beltrami H.S.)
Dunbar was named the Pine to Prairie Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2018…She was named All-Pine to Prairie Conference in 2018…In addition, Dunbar was selected as the Pine to Prairie Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2017…She was also named All-Pine to Prairie Conference squad in 2017…Dunbar was named All-Pine to Prairie Conference Honorable Mention squad in 2016.
Dunbar is the daughter of Rachael Sannes and Jason Dunbar…She is undecided on a major at Minnesota Crookston.

30 Minnesota Boys Basketball players have been selected as Semi-Finalists for the 2019 MBCA McDonald Award. The award is named in honor of Bob McDonald, a legend and icon in Chisholm, the state of Minnesota, and the nation for his accomplishments as a coach and his commitment to educating students.

Minnesota High School Boys Volleyball is going to have a pretty impressive 51 schools having boys volleyball teams this spring. Most of the teams are from the metro area, but there are teams from northeast and southern Minnesota. It would be interesting to see how many more schools add volleyball over the next five or 10 years and if it takes off in our area. With declining enrollment in most school districts in our area, it will be interesting to see if schools opt out of track or baseball and look at adding volleyball where only 8 to 10 boys are needed to field a “full” varsity team. With the start of 51 teams already in the first year, I am guessing the Minnesota State Highs School League has taken notice and within five to 10 years, it will become an official MSHSL sport. When it does, you will see an increase in teams.

Paul Bittner, is playing for the Cleveland Monsters, the AHL affiliate of the Columbus Bluejacket. Paul didn’t score in a 3-2 loss to Binghamton on Saturday and didn’t score, but had six shots on goal in a 4-3 OT loss to Binghamton on Sunday. Paul scored a goal and added an assist and six shots on goal in a 5-2 victory over Rochester on Tuesday. Cleveland will play Belleville on Friday and Saturday, Utica on Sunday and Rochester on Wednesday.
Haley Roed, a Junior swimming at Minnesota State Moorhead. Haley finished 23rd in the 50 freestyle in the first day of the NSIC championships in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The championships continue Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Ryan Bittner, is a Senior playing hockey for the #1 ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Ryan didn’t score in a 6-3 victory over UW-Stout and had an assist in a 7-1 drubbing of #3 UW-Eau Claire on Saturday in the final game of the regular season. The Pointers are off until February 22 for the WIAC semifinals.
Brady Heppner, is a Junior playing hockey at St. Johns University in Collegeville. Brady scored a goal and had six shots on goal in a 2-2 tie with St. Thomas on Thursday and he scored a goal and had three shots in a 4-1 victory over St. Thomas on Friday. St. Johns will host Gustavus on Thursday and travel to Gustavus on Friday.
Aaron Hollcraft, is a Senior playing basketball and baseball for the UMC Golden Eagles. Aaron didn’t play, because of an injury, in victories over Minnesota State Mankato on Friday and Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday. UMC will host Minot State and U of Mary this weekend. He will join the baseball team when Basketball season is over.
Colton Weiland, is a freshman wrestling for #1 ranked St. Cloud State. Colton is listed at 149 pounds. Colton was injured and had surgery and will miss the season.
Bailey Folkers, is a freshman on the University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team. Bailey didn’t play in an 86-69 loss to Bethany Lutheran on Saturday. Superior will be at North Central on Saturday.
Aleece Durbin, is a freshman on the University of North Dakota Women’s Track and Field team. Aleece finished 4th place in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.60 and she finished 6th place in the 200 dash with a time of 26.94 South Dakota State Classic on Friday and Saturday.
Brita Fagerlund, is a Sophomore on the University of Jamestown Jimmy Women’s Track team. Brita finished 67th place in the Women’s Weight Throw with a throw of 36-01.25 and will be at the GPAC indoors this weekend.
Ally Tiedemann, a Freshman playing tennis at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Ally won her 5th singles match 6-2, 6-3 and lost her #3 doubles match 6-3 in a 4-3 victory over Bemidji State. Ally won her second doubles match 6-0 and won her #3 singles match 6-1, 6-1 in a 7-0 victory over UMC. UMD will take on Winona State and Upper Iowa this weekend.
Bobby Tiedemann, is a Junior on the St. Mary’s University Men’s Tennis team in Winona. Bobby lost his first doubles match 8-4 and lost his second singles match 6-1, 6-0 in a 7-2 loss to St. Scholastica. St. Mary’s will play St. Norbert and Wartburg on Saturday.
Marietta Geist, a Junior on the Carleton College Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field teams. Marrietta didn’t run in Carleton’s Meet of the Hearts meet. They travel to the University of Minnesota this weekend.
Ben Trostad, a Freshman playing golf at the University of Minnesota Crookston. UMC is off until the spring.
Ethan Magsam, a Freshman playing golf at the University of Minnesota Crookston. UMC is off until the spring.
Elise Tangquist, is a Sophomore golfer for the University of Northwestern in St. Paul. Northwestern is done until the spring.
