The madness has begun. We are in the middle of the State Girls Hockey tournament, the boy’s section hockey tournament, girls basketball playoffs start this week with a few play-in games and kick into gear next week, section individual wrestling tournaments are held this weekend with state wrestling next weekend! And UMC basketball starts their playoffs next week. Besides that, nothing is going on!
It looks like the UMC Women’s basketball team is going to go to play the University of Sioux Falls on Wednesday, February 26. The men will play in either Winona or Mankato with a slight possibility of Augustana. I have to be in Washington D.C. for the National Association of Broadcasters State Leadership meetings (representing the Minnesota Broadcasters Association) on Monday and we go to Capitol Hill and talk with our Senators and Representatives all day on Tuesday and have a reception at Union State on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, I have to miss a White House tour on Wednesday because I have to fly home to broadcast a UMC Women’s Basketball game in Sioux Falls.
So here is my schedule (as long as UMC plays at Sioux Falls, which is about a 90 percent certainty). I cover Section 8A individual wrestling in Crookston. When I am done with the story and posting pictures and everything else on the web, I drive to Fargo where Carter (my sixth-grader) is playing in a tournament and they decided to have some team bonding and stay overnight at a hotel. So I will wake up in Fargo (things kind of worked out here) and drive to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and fly out at 11 a.m. to D.C. I have meetings all day Monday, at the Capitol on Tuesday until 5 p.m., have a reception at Union Station go to the hotel and work on sports feever. Wake up Wednesday morning head to the airport, fly to Sioux Falls and get there by 3 p.m. head to the University of Sioux Falls to broadcast the UMC women’s game. Drive home and hopefully get home by 2 a.m. get to bed. Head to work Thursday morning and do the Crookston Pirate girls basketball game vs EGF in the first round if Crookston Pirate Boys Hockey isn’t in the Section Championship!!
The madness is here and I couldn’t be more excited for the upcoming madness!

The Section 8A Boys Hockey tournament will have the quarter-finals on Thursday, the semi-finals on Saturday and the championship on Thursday, February 27. The schedule
Thursday – February 20 (Section 8A Quarter-Finals)
7:00 PM #8 Lake of the Woods- at #1 Warroad
6:00 PM #5 Detroit Lakes at #4 Kittson County Central-
7:00 PM #7 Crookston- at #2 East Grand Forks-
7:00 PM #6 Red Lake Falls at #3 Thief River Falls-
Saturday – February 22 (Section 8A Semi-Finals at Thief River Falls)
6:00 PM – Winner LOW vs Warroad vs Winner DL vs KCC
8:15 PM – Winner Crookston vs EGF vs Winner RLF vs TRF
Thursday – February 27 (Section 8A Championship at Thief River Falls)
7:00 PM –
The first round has a couple of interesting matchups. The first intriguing game would be Red Lake Falls at Thief River Falls. The had a tight game earlier this year. Red Lake Falls can score and Thief River Falls is strong defensively. I am thinking this game will come down to the wire. It could be a great game.
The #4 vs #5 is predictably an interesting game. Detroit Lakes and Kittson County Central split during the regular season. The game is in Hallock, which gives the Bearcats a bit of an advantage. I am thinking KCC is going to get DL by two goals on Thursday. Wouldn’t it be cool to see RLF and KCC in the semi-finals??
Warroad is a heavy favorite to beat Lake of the Woods and East Side is a heavy favorite to win as well. Although with Crookston and EGF you never know, but Crookston will have to play a much better game in the semi-finals (than their first-round game) if they want to have a chance to be in the game.
I am predicting a Warroad vs EGF championship match. (Yeah…I know I am really going out on a limb!)

The CCHA hockey conference is coming back! This past summer, seven men’s hockey teams (Bemidji State, Bowling Green, Ferris State, Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech, Minnesota State Mankato and Northern Michigan) announced they were leaving the WCHA and will form a new conference. The WCHA is currently made up of 10 teams and the seven teams listed earlier will leave behind Alabama-Huntsville, Alaska-Anchorage, and Alaska. The move is for obvious reasons – travel. It sounds like St. Thomas is rumored as a team to join the conference to make it an eight-team league!
It is amazing how fast the Division 1 men’s hockey landscape has changed in a few years.
The CCHA conference will begin in the 2021-22 season.
— — —
With the talk of Division 1 hockey, we have had several people ask if the University of Minnesota Crookston is/could plan on going Division 1 (part dreaming/part decent question) in the future. Some of the reason why people are asking is because of the hire of Steve Johnson as head coach.
Without asking anybody at UMC, here is my answer. No…..UNLESS they get a BIG-TIME (Ralph Englestad type) donor!
UNLV is looking at going from club hockey to NCAA Division 1. They estimate it would take $15 to $20 million to make the transition solvent and have UNLV set for the first five years. The top programs in Division 1 have around a $2 million dollar budget and add in the 18 scholarships. Title 9 compliance would also be in question. From what I understand, if you have one mens Division 1 sport, you would have to add a female Division 1 sport. This is why schools like St. Cloud State, Bemidji State, Duluth, and Mankato still have women’s hockey even though the programs cost them around $1 million per year.
The arena size is also a question that would have to be answered. The WCHA (which will have its last year next season) has a requirement of 2,500 seats or more to get into the conference. That would likely be the only conference that UMC could possibly get into. The Crookston Sports Center only has 1,200 seating. So UMC/Crookston would have to build a new arena!!
So you are looking at a good $50 to 60 million just to get a program started. For a school that doesn’t have any spare change lying around and struggles with fundraising for various reasons, it won’t happen. UNLESS a BIG TIME donor steps up to the plate. So, if you have $50 million lying around, you could make it happen and bring D-1 Hockey to C-town!!!

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Men’s Basketball team looks like they will be the sixth seed in the north and will take on the third seed in the south in the first round of the playoffs. UMC has won two games in a row and the impressive part of the weekend road sweep was the defense they played at Mary on Saturday.
UMC will host Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State. The only way UMC doesn’t get the sixth seed and drops down – if they lose both and Mary wins both their games against Moorhead and Northern.
UMC’s first-round opponent has been narrowed down to three teams. Winona State, Mankato, and Augustana. It is looking like if either Winona State or Mankato wins both of their games they will host UMC. It will likely come down to who wins between Winona and Mankato play each other on Saturday.
Winona State plays Concordia-St. Paul and Mankato
Beat Mankato in the first meeting
Split with Augustana
Mankato plays Upper Iowa and Winona State
Lost to Winona State in the first meeting
Split with Augustana
Augustana plays Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State
Split with Winona State
Split with Mankato
Who would UMC rather play? I am guessing they would like to see Mankato over Winona State. The Golden Eagles lost to Mankato 93-90 in their only meeting this year. Winona State beat UMC 80-66 in their only meeting. If UMC plays like they are capable, they can beat anybody. If they don’t come out ready, they can lose to anybody!
— — —
The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball team knows where they are going to be going for the first round of the NSIC tournament. UMC has a 95 percent chance of going to the University of Sioux Falls for the second year in a row.
The UMC women have lost five games in a row and will host Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State this weekend. The only way UMC can move out of the cellar in the north is if they win both games this weekend. If they win both and Minot State loses both (very likely since they play at Moorhead and Northern State). But Duluth is the top team in the north and St. Cloud State is second. So it will be tough for UMC to pull off the sweep. But Duluth and St. Cloud are pretty much solidified at the one and two seeds so who knows!!

JOKES
Little David was in his 5th grade class when the teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living. All the typical answers came up – fireman, policeman, salesman, doctor, lawyer.
David was being uncharacteristically quiet, so the teacher asked him about his father. “My father’s an exotic dancer in a gay cabaret and takes off all his clothes in front of other men and they put money in his underwear. Sometimes, if the offer’s really good, he’ll go home with some guy and have sex with him for money.”
The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some exercises and took little David aside to ask him, “Is that really true about your father?”
“No, of course not;” said David, “he works for Nancy Pelosi, but I was too embarrassed to say that in front of the class.”

A police officer sees a man driving around with a pickup truck full of penguins. He pulls the guy over and says, “You can’t drive around with penguins in this town! Take them to the zoo immediately.”
The guy obliges and drives away.
The next day, the officer sees the same guy driving around with the truck full of penguins again. This time, though, all the penguins are wearing sunglasses.
The police officer pulls the guy over and says, “I thought I told you to take these penguins to the zoo yesterday?”
The guy replies, “I did, and today I’m taking them to the beach.”
