This is the most exciting time of the year, with section championships galore over the next two days. Half the teams will be excited, and half will be sad, but what these kids and teams have done through the pandemic has been amazing. Congratulations to all the teams on making it this far. You have represented your schools and communities well, and I hope you enjoyed the ride because your communities, fans, family, and friends have enjoyed it!
Good Luck to all teams in the section championships and at state if you make it.

The Fertile-Beltrami School District will be making a decision on a boys hockey coop soon. They discussed it at their school board meeting this week. Crookston Boys Hockey Coach Josh Hardy and Superintendent Jeremy Olson attended the board meeting, and the board heard from some parents on both sides.
As far as we know – No decision has been made on the potential hockey co-op. It sounds like cost is the biggest discrepancy. Red Lake Falls is offering Fertile-Beltrami the cost of hockey as an activity fee. Crookston is taking its cost per pupil divided by the cost to run the program ($850-$1250 depending on how many are out).
So it will likely come down to cost, but we heard that a parent told the Fertile-Beltrami school board that basically his kids were going to play in Crookston one way or the other, which means they would open enroll to Crookston if the coop went with Red Lake Falls.
There was another parent that spoke at the meeting pro coop with Red Lake Falls. Her kids currently play in Red Lake Falls’ youth program after playing in Crookston for a few years, and they want to stay in Red Lake Falls. So the Fertile-Beltrami school board has a tough decision to make, and it sounds like a decision could be made at the next meeting.

I almost fell off my office chair on Sunday afternoon when I checked my email. I found out I was nominated and received the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association Media award. I am humbled and honored to get the award, especially when I was nominated by two of the best coaches in the state!!
This award goes to everybody at KROX. We are a team, and Frank Fee, Blake Fee, Aaron Morse have all helped KROX cover wrestling this year. Normally we would have had Rod Olson help cover the matches with us too, but COVID has limited radio coverage in the postseason to one person per station.
We have always tried to give the Pirate and area teams the best coverage we can possibly give them. We want to give kids the recognition and acknowledgment they deserve, and we want family, friends, community members to watch/listen/read their accomplishments. We stepped up our coverage this year, especially with the video streaming, and it was to have KROX’s coverage recognized. I thoroughly enjoy the excitement of wrestling, and this year it was a lot of fun with a Section Team Championship (only the second in program history), 10 Pirate wrestlers made it to the state prelims, and two making it to the state finals!!!
We thank the wrestlers and coaches for bringing so much excitement and fun to Crookston this winter. I should also mention that the Pirate Wrestling section championship/state prelim story on our website had over 4,000 unique views, and we had over 1,500 people listening online to the matches (we can’t measure the radio listeners, but know we had A LOT), and we had over 2,400 people watch the Section 8A Individual wrestling tournament on our video stream!
The email to let me know of the award is below –
Chris,
You were nominated by Kenny Geiser (TRF Coach) and Westy Hanson (Crookston Coach) for the MN Wrestling Coaches Association Media Award. I am happy to share that you have been selected as this year’s winner of the award for the top-notch coverage of high school wrestling that you provide. I have a plaque for you that I will get to Kenny to deliver to you.
Congratulations, and thank you for the outstanding wrestling coverage.

The Minnesota State High School League Minnesota State Individual Wrestling seeds have been announced, and Crookston Ethan Boll received the second seed at 195 pounds, and Zach Brown received the sixth seed at 120-pounds.
Zach Brown was 33-3 on the year and will take on Ryan Jensen of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa. Jensen, a freshman, is 31-4 on the year. The second seed is Marshall Larson (35-1) of Aitkin, who beat Brown in the state prelim championship, and the two could meet again if they both win or lose in the first round.
Ethan Boll was 34-2 on the year and will wrestle Carter Quam of Kenyon-Wanamingo. Quam was 27-3 on the year. The top seed at 195 pounds is Thomas Dineen, who gave Boll one of his two losses on the year.
Brown and Boll will wrestle on Saturday, March 27, starting at 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

The Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team wrapped up their season last week. Taking a look at the seniors. They are a good group of kids on and off the court –
Carter Bruggeman – He was a big strong kid that could take the ball to the hoop and finish with the best of them. He worked on his outside shot and was able to make a good percentage of threes. He drew a ton of fouls and took a lot of free throws, and did a good job of leading the team.
Easton Tangquist – He was kind of the gauge for the Pirates this season. When he was hitting shots, it seemed to spark the rest of the team. He could shoot the three and distributed the ball well. He left his mark in the record book in several categories and that is something very few can say. He had a good career for the Pirates.
Jacob Miller – He missed most of last year with a leg injury, and it was good to see him playing a full season this year. He could shoot the three as well as anybody on the team and gave the team some energy when he was on the floor.
Karsten Isaacson – He didn’t get as many minutes as he would have liked, but when his name was called, he always worked hard. He was always hesitant to shoot, but his athleticism got him a few rebounds and some steals.
Lucas Winger – Lucas was the crowd favorite, and anytime he got in, the crowd would get excited. He didn’t get as many minutes as he would have liked, but he was a good member of the team and always kept things light.
The Crookston High School Boys Basketball record book has been updated, and some of the highlights involving this years team –
Charges taken – Jack Garmen 25 (tying his school record in a season from last year, and he is the all-time leader in charges taken in a career with one year left)
Single-game assists – Easton Tangquist had 6 one time and five three times which gets him on the record list.
Career Assists – Easton Tangquist finished with 113, which puts him at 22nd all-time.
Three-point field goals made in a game –
Jacob Hesby made 7 and was one of the record held by Nick Garmen and Chris Wavra.
Jack Garmen made 6 in a game and was two off the record.
Garmen and Tangquist made 5 in a game.
Three-point field goals in a season-
Jack Garmen made 41 out of 130 for 31.5%
Jacob Hesby made 26 of 82 for 31.7%
Rebounds in a game –
Carter Bruggeman had 14
Scoring in a single game – (minimum 25)
Easton Tangquist made the list with 26
Jacob Hesby made the list with 25
Scoring career –
Easton Tangquist is 26th all-time with 522 points

The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team wrapped up their fantastic season a little earlier than they were hoping with a loss to Barnesville in the section quarterfinals. Crookston had a great season going 15-4. Crookston’s schedule might have come back to hurt them this year as they had a QRF of 24, but they would have been fourth in the south subsection.
Crookston had five wins against winning teams. Their losses were to Breckenridge, Fergus Falls, Barnesville, and Barnesville. So they were 5-4 against winning teams and played 10 games against teams with losing records.
With that said, it was still an outstanding season, and the end was disappointing as it is for most teams.
So what does Crookston have to do before next season to be at the top of the North Sub-section again? Crookston needs to get bigger and stronger. To quote the new Gopher Men’s Basketball coach, “they need to play with an edge.” The Pirates are too nice and play that way. They need to get tougher and start to play physical hard-nosed basketball like Fergus Falls, Barnesville, Breckenridge, and others.
Finding a way to replace/fill-in Emma Borowicz’s spot is going to be tough. Emma might have had one of her better games in the playoff loss to Barnesville while scoring half of the team’s points.
Crookston will also have to improve in the half-court offense and finding a way to create their own points. They struggled to score against good teams if they couldn’t turn their defense into offense, and against good teams, you aren’t going to do that (for example, Barnesville, Fergus Falls, etc.). So they have to get bigger, stronger, tougher, and play with an edge. And they need some of the J.V. players to step up their game in a big way to help out and try to fill the gap left by the graduation of Emma Borowicz and Emma Boll.
Speaking of the seniors –
Emma Boll – She was an undersized post player, but what she lacked in height, she made up for with hard work and toughness. She found ways to get shots off in the post with some pretty nice moves and always worked hard. You knew what you were getting from her every time she was on the floor. She was also the leader in having Barnesville fans freak out because of the awesome Tomahawk blocks she had. She is not only a good player, but she is a great teammate and person.
Emma Borowicz – She is a perfect example of how hard work pays off, and nobody worked harder than Emma. She was always in the gym working on her game and turned herself into an All-State Honorable mention player, and she will also be playing in the Class AA all-star game after the season is over. She deserves all the accolades she receives. She might be the best all-around player in the section or at least one of the top three. She was able to find a way to score without being open. She could drive to the hoop, hit the three, and hit everything in between. She is a great kid, a great teammate, and will do great things in the future and will be running track at Minnesota State-Mankato.
The rest of the Pirates have some work to do while trying to fill the shoes of the two outstanding graduating seniors. They have a great core coming back, but they will need the players off the bench and the J.V. team to step up and work hard on their game if they want to have another great year next year. As we say for every team – they need to get bigger, faster, stronger, and with this team, they need to get tougher/get an edge, a don’t mess with me vibe!.

The Minnesota Youth Hockey regional tournaments were held last weekend, and if you’re wondering if there will be a change in the top teams in the area any time soon…..there probably won’t be!
Bantam A’s –
Warroad beat East Grand Forks in the championship 5-2, and both teams advance to state.
Warroad beat Alexandria 8-3, beat TRF 5-1, and beat EGF in the championship.
EGF beat Greenway 11-0, beat Fergus Falls 2-1, lost to Warroad in the championship, and beat Thief River Falls in the true second game by a 5-1 score.
Oh, by the way, Thief River Falls finished third place!!! The big three rule again.
Bantam B’s –
East Grand Forks beat Bemidji in the Championship 1-0. Alexandria beat Bemidji 1-0 in the true second game.
EGF beat Alexandria 2-1, beat RLF 4-1, and won the championship.
Peewee A’s –
Hibbing beat East Grand Forks in the Championship 6-3. East Grand Forks beat Moorhead 9-1 in the true second game.
EGF beat Eveleth-Gilbert 8-2, beat Alexandria 4-3, lost to Hibbing 6-3 in the championship, and beat Moorhead 9-1 in the true second.

The Section 8A Girls Basketball championship game will have Stephen-Argyle taking on Cass Lake-Bena on Friday at 7:00 p.m. from the Ralph Englestad Arena in Thief River Falls. KROX will be broadcasting the game on the radio, and we will also be video streaming it. You can watch the game by CLICKING HERE or copy and paste this link – https://youtu.be/Hdnx1oJgbAw or go to KROXAM.com and click on the KROX Video Streaming button.
It will be the first meeting between the two teams. It will be a good matchup, and the QRF has them at a dead heat. The teams are tied for the 10th best QRF in Class A with 94.7.
Stephen-Argyle is 17-3 on the year. Notable wins – Red Lake Falls twice, BGMR, Fosston.
Cass Lake-Bena is 16-5 on the year. Notable wins – Mt. Iron-Buhl, and Fosston.
Stephen-Argyle plays solid in your face defense. Cass Lake-Bena really works the ball around and isn’t afraid to shoot long three-pointers. Both teams rely on their defense to force turnovers, so it will be interesting. I think the game will come down to whoever shoots better because quality shots might be at a premium.
Chris’ pick – Stephen-Argyle by 3 points.
— — —
Section 8A Boys Basketball Championship game will have the red hot Cass Lake-Bena Panthers and the Badger/Greenbush-Middle River Gators playing at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
I don’t care what the rankings say, but Cass Lake-Bena is the #1 team in Chris Fee’s rankings. Now that they are back at full strength, I don’t know if anybody can beat them? We will find out on Thursday night because they have a tough section championship game with a very good BGMR team waiting for them. BGMR is hard-nosed, and they can put up points in a hurry.
Cass Lake-Bena is 18-3 on the year. Notable wins – Pine River-Backus twice, Nevis, Win-E-Mac. They lost to Nevis by four, Deer River by one, and #1 ranked Mahnomen-Waubun 73-72, and in the game, the Panthers led by 20, and their stud freshman got hurt, and they ended up losing.
BGMR is 18-3 on the year. Notable wins – Warroad, Stephen-Argyle twice, Fertile-Beltrami. They lost to Northern Freeze, Stephen-Argyle, and Warroad.
Chris’ pick – Cass Lake-Bena by 13

The Section 8AA Girls Basketball championship is a rematch of Fergus Falls and Pelican Rapids.
Fergus Falls is 18-3 on the year, and after losing three of their first six games, they have bounced back to win their last 15 games.
Pelican Rapids is 19-1 on the year with their only loss to Crookston. They have won 13 in a row.
I have seen both teams play and think it should be a decent game, but I think Fergus Falls is too good this year. And they want revenge after losing to Pelican Rapids in the championship last year.
Chris’ pick – Fergus Falls by 11

Section 8AA Boys Basketball Championship –
Surprise, Surprise…It is Perham and Fergus Falls in the championship. The two best teams made it back, and this is going to be an entertaining game. You have Perham, who won their 57th-straight home game, good for fifth place in Minnesota boys basketball history for consecutive home wins. They had been tied with Esko (1972-79) at 56.
Perham is led by Finn Diggins (coolest section 8AA name award winner). and Fergus Falls has a two-headed monster with a fantastic guard and a 7-foot post. Obviously, the seven-footer is a tough match-up, but Perham will be ready for it. The only meeting between the two had Fergus Falls winning 48-43, so expect another battle.
Perham is 16-5 on the year. Notable wins were Pequot Lakes in OT, Esko, DGF in OT. Losses were to Barnesville, Breckenridge, Moorhead, Fergus Falls, DGF in OT.
Fergus Falls is 14-7 on the year. Notable wins were Willmar twice, Bemidji twice, ROCORI twice, Perham. Losses were to Alexandria twice, Brainerd, Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud Apollo, Sartell-St. Stephen.
Chris’ pick – Perham by 3 in OT

Section 8A Boys Hockey Championship –
Shocker alert – It is East Grand Forks and Warroad playing for the championship. It will likely be the case for the next five years judging by the success both programs are having in the Bantams and Peewees.
Warroad is 13-4-2 on the year and has won six in a row. Notable wins – Roseau, EGF, Little Falls. They lost to EGF, Grand Forks Red River, Roseau in OT, and Grand Rapids. They tied Grand Forks Central and Moorhead.
East Grand Forks is 12-8 on the year and has won five in a row. Notable wins – Warroad, Roseau twice. They lost to Grand Forks Red River twice, Grand Forks Central twice, Moorhead twice, Roseau in OT, and Warroad.
Chris’ pick – Warroad 4-2

The College Men’s Basketball transfer portal has over 800 names in it as of Wednesday afternoon. That is almost double the number from last year.
One name that sticks out is Northern State’s, Parker Fox. Just on Tuesday, Fox was contacted by Minnesota, Pittsburgh, San Diego State, St. John’s, and Texas Tech. While everybody in the NSIC outside of Aberdeen is happy to see him leave, it will be a blow to the NSIC because he is the best men’s basketball player in the conference, maybe ever.
