SPORTS FEEVER – October 17, 2019

It is tournament time for Volleyball and Football starting next week.  This is the schedule for the KROX sports department for the upcoming week.  On Monday we head to Karlstad for volleyball, on Tuesday we head to Warroad, on Wednesday we have the UMC Coaches show, on Thursday and Friday we will have high school volleyball playoffs, Saturday we will likely have two high school playoff football games and Saturday and Sunday we take a deep breath!!!   It is a fun time of year and the Section 8A, 8 9-man, 8AAA and 6 9-Man semifinals and championships should be great games.  The only section we don’t expect to have great semi-finals and championship is 8AA with Barnesville a HEAVY, HEAVY favorite.  They haven’t had a close game yet and we don’t expect one in the section tournament…..unless the field conditions are as sloppy as they have been and that might even the playing field.

Good Luck to all teams in the playoffs!!

Congratulations to the Thief River Falls Prowlers Girls Tennis team on winning the Section 8A Girls Tennis championship.   They beat Crookston 5-2 in the semi-finals and beat Perham in the championship 5-2.

The Section 8A Individual Tennis tournament will wrap up today (Thursday) in Fargo and for the second straight tennis season, Crookston has a doubles team play in the semi-finals for the right to play in the championship.  The Pirate Boys had it last year and now the girls have it this year.

Catherine Tiedemann and Emma Borowicz (state participants last year) will take on Hayden and Halle Winjum at 9:00 a.m. in Fargo.  This is an intriguing matchup.  Catherine Tiedemann was playing her best tennis I have seen her play in the team tournament.  She can smoke the ball with accuracy and could be the difference-maker in the match.  Can Emma battle through the knee pain?   How do the Winjum’s do when they are playing their teammates and playing in the biggest match of their careers?  I am guessing they will leave it all out on the line (like their mom or uncle Jake did on the tennis court back in the day!).
It sucks to have to battle your teammates, but it is also nice as the Pirate’s doubles dominance in Section 8A continues!

I have been getting questions from people all over Northwest Minnesota on my thoughts on the tournament.  (Okay two people)  Here are my predictions –
The top two in each subsection will make up the final four – KCC, Sacred Heart, Fosston and Ada-Borup/West.  With a KCC vs Sacred Heart championship (they cross-bracket).  But I will talk out of both sides of my mouth and don’t be surprised if it was an Ada-Borup/West vs Fosston championship.  The top four teams are all very good and it will be whoever plays well in the next two weeks!

Is the Minnesota Golden Gopher Football team for real??  They just might be after a 34-7 home win against Nebraska on Saturday.
Dating back to last season, Minnesota has won eight straight games (Nebraska, Illinois, at Purdue, Georgia Southern, at Fresno State, South Dakota State, vs. Georgia Tech and at Wisconsin), which is tied for the fourth-longest winning streak in the nation.  The last time Minnesota won eight straight games was 70 years ago, as the Gophers ended the 1948 season with four straight wins and started the 1949 season with four straight wins.

The Gophers SHOULD win their next two games against Rutgers and Maryland and could be 8-0 with their final four games – hosting Penn State on November 9.  At Iowa on November 16.  At Northwestern on November 23 and they end the regular season hosting Wisconsin on November 30.

The key to the schedule for the Gophers is no Michigan or Ohio State this year and the main question for all of us fans……..When does Cinderella’s shoe fall off?  Penn State?  Iowa??  Wisconsin???  All three???  We will see and enjoy the ride the rest of the way.

Congratulations to Red Lake Falls’ Clara Girdler on recording the 1,000th dig of her career last week.

2017 Crosby-Ironton grad and current NDSU Football tight end, Noah Gindorff has five catches this year and all five are for touchdowns!!!

JOKES

“Hey officer, how did the hackers escape?”
“No idea, they just ransomware!”

— — —

A psychiatrist was conducting a group therapy session with four young mothers and their small children.

“You all have obsessions,” he observed.

To the first mother, he said, “You are obsessed with eating. You’ve even named your daughter Candy.”

He turned to the second Mom. “Your obsession is with money. Again, it manifests itself in your child’s name, Penny.”

He turns to the third Mom. “Your obsession is alcohol. This too manifests itself in your child’s name, Brandy.”

At this point, the fourth mother gets up, takes her little boy by the hand and whispers, “Come on, Dick, we’re leaving.”

A man staggers into an emergency room with two black eyes and a five iron wrapped tightly around his throat. Naturally, the doctor asks him what happened.

Well, it was like this, said the man. I was having a quiet round of golf with my wife, when she sliced her ball into a pasture of cows.

We went to look for it, and while I was rooting around I noticed one of the cows had something white at its rear end. I walked over and lifted up the tail, and sure enough, there was my wife’s golf ball……..stuck right in the middle of the cow’s butt. That’s when I made my mistake.

“What did you do?” asks the doctor.

Well, I lifted the tail and yelled to my wife, “Hey, this looks like yours!”
