The Section 8A Girls Tennis team tournament and Section 8A Girls and Boys Soccer playoffs start October 11.
High School Football and Volleyball playoffs are a little over a month away.
The Section 8A Swim meet will be held November 9 and 10 at Warroad.

On Monday, October 22, 2018, the Minnesota State High School Tennis Coaches Association (MSHSTCA) will have the pleasure of inducting two new members to its Hall of Fame. Michael Cartwright of Mounds View and Mike Geffre of Crookston will become members of this exclusive club with a ceremony held at the Earl Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center during the State Girls Tennis Banquet. Michael Cartwright will speak at the Girls’ Banquet and Mike Geffre will speak at the Boys’ Banquet.
Geffre has been the head coach of the Crookston Pirates Boys’ team since 1986 (31 years) and coach of the Girls’ team since 1989 (28 years). As a graduate of Bemidji State University, graduating with honors, Mike has led the Pirates to the Minnesota State High School League State Tournament nine times with the girls and 13 times with the boys. Crookston has been a tennis dynasty in the northern part of the state during Mike’s tenure as coach. Coaches around the area always know that Crookston comes to play and play well.
Mike has also coached two State Doubles Champions for the boys and one State Doubles Champion for the girls. Other than all of the State Tournament appearances, one of Mike’s greatest highlights was having the opportunity to coach his daughter Amanda throughout her high school career.
Mike has a wife, Lori Schlenker, a daughter Amanda, and twin sons Isaac and Simon.

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Football team will be at Minot State on Saturday and they have a legitimate shot of picking up their first Northern Sun Conference (NSIC) ROAD win since they beat Minnesota State Moorhead on November 3, 2007! Almost 11 years since UMC won their last conference road game. I still remember the game-winning touchdown…..It was Jordan Grafsgaard (a tight end) catching the pass in the middle of the end zone.
The last time UMC Football had a road win was at Mayville State on September 3, 2009.
The last UMC Football win was November 7, 2015 when they beat Minot State 45-14. That win at home was 26 games ago.
There is a lot at stake this weekend for UMC Football. They HAVE to win at Minot State on Saturday. Minot State isn’t good and going in, on paper, UMC is either even or a little ahead of Minot State.
UMC has a playmaker quarterback, they have some decent receivers, and the running back position has shown glimpses. The line is the spot that has hampered the Golden Eagles a bit, along with penalties and turnovers.
Defensively, UMC has done well against the run, but they have been torched on the pass. Anytime a team needs a first down or big play, they go to the air and seem to get a big play. I haven’t looked at the forecast for Minot on Saturday. They have a beautiful facility with new turf, stands and you never know if the most famous alum (Josh Duhamel) will be at the game like he was a handful of years ago. I told my wife some Josh Dew-hammel guy is here and she got all excited.
You can hear the game on KROX Radio with Leo Blavin on the call. Leo is anxiously awaiting the chance to announce his first UMC Football victory in his second year of doing the games.

The Minnesota Timberwolves could be the worst franchise in sports history. I don’t know if they are jinxed, poorly run (well we know that is a big part of it) or what, but now Jimmy Buttler wants to leave and gave the Wolves three teams he would be willing to be traded to. It is just another chapter in the sad story that is the Minnesota Timberwolves franchise.

Paul Bittner is at Columbus Bluejacket training camp and is hoping to make his first pre-season game appearance on Friday. Paul didn’t play in a 4-1 loss to Buffalo or a 4-1 victory over Chicago. They have 36 forwards trying to make the team, so the competition is fierce on a team that has outstanding young talent.
The Columbus Blue Jackets trimmed their training camp roster by three players, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced Wednesday.
The Blue Jackets returned forward Trey Fix-Wolansky, the club’s seventh-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, to the Western Hockey League’s Edmonton Oil Kings and released forward Egor Sokolov and defenseman Jordan Sambrook from tryout contracts. There are currently 58 players in camp – 34 forwards, 18 defensemen and six goaltenders.
Columbus, 1-1-0 in preseason play, returns to action on Friday against the St. Louis Blues. Game time from Enterprise Center is 8 p.m. ET.
The Blue Jackets open their 18th NHL regular season at Detroit on Thursday, October 4 before playing their home opener the following night against the Carolina Hurricanes. Game time from Nationwide Arena is 7 p.m. ET.

The University of Minnesota Crookston Men’s Basketball team has received another verbal commitment, this time Quintin Winterfeldt, a Senior at Waupun, Wisconsin. The 6’5 forward averaged 16.5 points per game as a Junior at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin and has transferred to Waupun.
UMC gave a scholarship offer in late July and obviously liked the offer and UMC.
Quintin is a strong, athletic wing that has a lot of ceiling. According to Prep Hoops Wisconsin, he could be a steal at the D2 level!

The NCAA Championships Committee announced Tuesday that is has approved a two-year pilot program recommended by the Division III Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Committees that will allow the committees to use the PairWise selection system to rank and select teams for championship competition.
The software is already in use in Division I “and has garnered positive feedback from coaches for its transparency,” according to an NCAA press release.
The change comes at no cost, and the committees will begin using PairWise during the 2018-19 season.

SECTION 8AA –
Section 8AA is exactly as every coach had predicted before the preseason started. You have Barnesville and Hawley and then you have everybody else. October 12 could be the game for the #1 seed when Hawley and Barnesville meet. One item to note, Barnesville opened the season with a victory over AAA Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton and Hawley had a loss to Class A Mahnomen-Waubun. Barnesville has the advantage right now and it is theirs to lose.
The fight for the #3 seed – It is wide open still. Bagley has a softer schedule as far as QRF “bonus points” go. Crookston will have another tough game on Friday at #8 ranked Breckenridge, Roseau and Frazee meet on Friday and whoever wins will have a leg up in the race for a higher seed and it might be tough for Warroad or UNC to make a run to the third spot.
Each week is important and teams have to win if they want to move up.
SECTION 8A –
The Mahnomen/Waubun Thunderbirds are the top team right now, but the gap between the top and second place team might not be as much as everybody was thinking. They are a very good team, but Red Lake County, Fertile-Beltrami and Polk County West have shown the semi-final and championship game will likely be tougher than previous years.
Red Lake County came from behind to beat Polk County West on Friday and now they have the fourth best QRF in the state. Fertile-Beltrami lost a two-point game to Ada-Borup/Norman County West and it sounds like that game could have gone either way. You have a four-team race for the top and if anybody can knock off Mahnomen-Waubun, they likely could be the top team.
Section 8 9-Man
Section 8 9-man has three familiar teams at the top. Stephen-Argyle and Goodridge-Grygla are tied for first with their 3-0 record and #10 in the state QRF. Kittson County Central is the third place team and we will know more about where Stephen-Argyle and KCC stand after their game on Friday. In my eyes, Stephen-Argyle is the team to beat until somebody can beat them.
SECTION 6 9-MAN Standings –
The Minnesota Scores site doesn’t have Park Christian in the section so I am using KROXAM.com’s standings.
Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal had a hard-fought win last weekend and Win-E-Mac has shown they might be the second best team right now. The Patriots have been a tough team for me to figure out, but I think by the time playoffs roll around, you could see them ready to make a run.
SECTION 8AAA STANDINGS-
The Section 8AAA has a new team on top this year with East Grand Forks starting the season 3-0 and a #3 QRF ranking in Class AAA!!! They have 19 seniors and some pretty good athletes, but more importantly, they have some great lineman. This is East Grand Forks’ year and one they have been waiting for a couple of years. I think the section is still wide open with five teams having a chance to win the championship this year. It will come down to who is healthy and who is playing well at the end of the year.

It is time for Week 2 of the Sports Feever Football picks and we aren’t settling for any stinking ties!!!!!!! Another thing – My scouting report sucked….It said Kirk Cousins doesn’t have two good games in a row…..It was dead wrong, because he was good when they needed him.
Last week I beat Ray Dusek while picking 9 of the 10 games correctly, my only incorrect pick was picking Sam Houston State to beat UND. Mr. Dusek picked 7 of the 10 games correctly and of course, the tie-breaker (Vikings game) ended in a tie!!
This week I take on Tom Helgeson of Christian Brothers Ford, formally of KROX Radio fame! Tommy had this to say –
“Chris, this is such an honor to get to be a challenger on Sports Feever Football picks. Your pool of challengers must be very low. Kind of ironic that I’m net up after Ray Dusek. As a former student of Franklin Elementary School in the Woods Addition where Ray was Principal, I spent a lot of my time there at a desk next to his in the office.”
Tom graduated from Crookston Central High School in 1980. In the fall of 1980 he attended Brown Institute from Broadcasting in Minneapolis, graduating in June of 1981. He was hired by Frank Fee to help out with announcers taking summer vacations. “I said sure, but after that, I am off to the big city to be the next major market DJ. 32 years later, I left KROX,” said Tommy. In January of 2013 Tommy went to work for Christian Brothers Ford in Crookston. “I will always have a place in my heart for everyone that I had a chance to work with at KROX,” added Tommy. About 17 years ago, Stephanie Helgeson (Athletic Director at UMC) and Tom purchased the Ness Cafe in Erskine from her parents, Mike and Diane, which Steph and Tom still own today and are doing a great job!
Enough of the introduction and pleasantries, but I can speak for the Fee and KROX family, that we appreciate everything Tom did and continues to do for KROX. It isn’t easy to be a salesman in a small town, but Tommy did a great job at it and I still remember when KROX was at the Fournet Building (before Four Seasons Clothing) and stopping by when I was young and Tommy always making us laugh and of course the Donald Duck voice!

Section 8AA Volleyball Standings-
The Section 8AA Volleyball sub-sections don’t have any big surprises so far.
The section has had a rough start as far as state-wide QRF goes.
Hawley is the top team in the North with a QRF state rank of 42 and the South’s top team is Park Rapids with an #11 ranking.
I honestly believe the section is wide open this year. You have six to eight teams that could all win the Section Championship!!! Right now I would say Hawley, DGF, Roseau, Park Rapids and Pequot Lakes are the early “favorites,” but I like Perham, Crosby-Ironton and Thief River Falls to have a chance if they can keep improving.
Section 8A Volleyball Standings –
The defending champion, Ada-Borup/Norman County West is the favorite so far, but Sacred Heart, and Stephen-Argyle are showing they will be in the hunt at tournament time. Once again the west subsection is much better than the west. You have five teams in the West that would be ahead of the top seed in the east (Lake of the Woods).
The question that everybody is asking….who can/will beat Ada-Borup? It will be a fun and competitive tournament!
I wish the Section 8A Volleyball and Basketball committees would look at doing a cross bracket once they get to the quarter or semi-finals. I don’t know why they won’t, but it would make for a better championship game. You could play the games in Crookston, Thief River Falls, Bagley or Bemidji. You could rotate it each year.

We have some exciting news from the UMC athletic department. The Athletic Department and Development Office has announced a fundraising campaign to give the UMC Golf teams a practice facility, “locker room” with a golf simulator and they are starting a fundraising campaign to raise the $75,000 needed for the project.
BUILD A GOLF PRACTICE FACILITY
$75,000 to invest in leading-edge golf simulation technology, create an innovative space for Golden Eagle men’s and women’s golf teams, enhance team, alumni, and school pride, impact student athlete’s ability to develop skills and compete at their highest level. Support this project with a gift of any amount or one of the following options:
$500 to name a hole/pin on the putting green (only 6 holes available)
$1,000 to name a locker to be used by Golden Eagle Golf student-athletes (not limited to one name per locker, however, a gift of $2,000 will secure one name only)
$4,000 to name the swing analysis space
$5,000 to name the putting green space
$10,000 to name the hitting bay/golf simulator space
$25,000 to name the golf practice facility

The Crookston Pirate Booster Club is gearing up for its annual membership drive. PIRATE BOOSTERS exists to support Crookston High boys’ and girls’ athletic programs.
The PIRATE BOOSTERS provide financial assistance which allows student-athletes to obtain equipment, uniforms, warm-ups and facilities enhancements. Your annual investment will help the athletic needs of the Crookston High School student-athletes.

Cade Salentine, is a redshirt Freshman playing football at the University of North Dakota.
Paul Bittner, is at Columbus Bluejacket training and he didn’t play in the first two preseason games.
Marietta Geist, a Junior on the Carleton College Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field teams. Marietta has been injured and hasn’t run yet this season. Carleton will be at the St. Olaf Invitational on Saturday.
Luke Edlund, is a Senior linebacker on the Crown College football team. Crown lost to St. Scholastica 46-20 and Luke had one tackle. Crown will host Northwestern College on Saturday.
Elise Tangquist, is a Sophomore golfer for the University of Northwestern in St. Paul. Elise shot a 95 and finished sixth place at the NCU Invitational at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Minneapolis. Northwestern will host an invite on September 25 at Gross National Golf Club in Minneapolis.
Isaac Westlake, a Junior playing golf for the Winona State Warriors. Isaac opened up the season at the Bemidji State Invite and finished 42nd with a two round total of 157. Winona State will host the J.R.Watkins Northern Regional on Monday and Tuesday.
Haley Roed, a Junior swimming at Minnesota State Moorhead. The season will start October 14 at the University of Mary.
Kate MacGregor, a Freshman swimming at Minnesota State Moorhead. The season will start October 14 at the University of Mary.
Ryan Bittner, is a Senior playing hockey for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Pointers first hockey game will be against Aurora University on Friday, October 26.
Brady Heppner, is a Junior playing hockey at St. Johns University in Collegeville. St. John’s will open the season on October 26 at the University of St. Thomas.
Aaron Hollcraft, is a Senior playing basketball and baseball for the UMC Golden Eagles. UMC will open the season on November 10 vs Arkansas Tech University in St. Paul.
Bailey Folkers, is a freshman on the University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team. Superior will open the season on Friday, November 16 vs Carthage College played in Depere, Wisconsin.
Brita Fagerlund, is a Sophomore on the University of Jamestown Jimmy Women’s Track team. The season will start in December.
