THREE APPLY FOR VACANT WARD 6 CROOKSTON CITY COUNCIL SEAT

The deadline for residents to apply for the Ward 6 vacancy on the Crookston City Council passed on Thursday afternoon and three community members had submitted their names for consideration.  The three applicants are Chris Plante, Dylane Klatt, and Patty Dillabough.  Dillabough currently is a member of the Crookston School Board and would need to resign her position if selected by the committee.  The vacancy is a result of Cindy Gjerswold resigning in August after moving out of town.  Gjerswold was elected in November 2018.

Crookston City Administrator Shannon Stassen said the final timeline is up to the City Council, but the goal would be to have a selection for the first City Council meeting in October.  “I think the goal the staff would recommend to try to have interviews completed and a selection made prior to the first meeting in October,” said Stassen.  “We’ll discuss it on Monday and it will be the council’s direction that leads us there.  The goal over the course of two weeks to set up, conduct those interviews, and make a selection so that when we get to that first meeting in October there could potentially be a replacement named at that time.”

Stassen said the interview committee will likely conduct a single interview with each applicant. “The other times that we’ve conducted these it’s been one interview session with the committee composed of the council and members of that ward,” said Stassen.  “I would guess it would be that same type of process with interviews over a day or two with the candidates to accommodate their schedules.  I wouldn’t anticipate multiple groups or follow up interviews unless the council deems that necessary.”

The soft deadline for Ward 6 residents to be a part of the interview committee was September 9, but there were no residents who had come forward at that time.  The council said that if anyone else came forward they’d still like to have residents on the committee and Stassen says he is aware of three people who have expressed interest.  “The last I checked I think we had three people after that soft deadline that said they’d be interested in sitting in,” said Stassen.  “Those names will be presented Monday [at the City Council meeting] as well.”
