TRF USES 20-0 RUN TO BEAT PIRATE BOYS BASKETBALL

The Thief River Falls Prowlers used a 20-0 run in the first half to beat the Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team 82-56 in a Section 8AA game played in Crookston.

FIRST HALF –
Crookston scored the first points of the game on a Jacob Hesby three-pointer before Thief River Falls answered with seven straight points with five points from Jack Manning and a basket from Dylan Hahn for a 7-3 lead.  Crookston battled back with a 10-5 run to take a 13-12 lead with 10:19 left in the half.  On the run, Crookston was led by a three-pointer each from Reggie Winjum, Jacob Hesby, and Jack Garmen, then a free throw from Haden Michaelson. This was the point in the game that Thief River Falls decided to take over.  The Prowlers went on a 20-0 run over six minutes taking advantage of Crookston turnovers to take a 32-13 lead with four minutes left in the half. “We had another good start, but then we had a couple of guys in foul trouble and that hurt us,” said Pirate Coach Greg Garmen. “We had some tough turnovers where we threw the ball straight back and it led to some easy baskets and that hurt.”
The teams played even the rest of the way, and Thief River Falls took a 40-20 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Thief River Falls scored the first seven points of the second half for a 47-20 lead, and it looked like things were getting away from the Pirates.  Crookston settled down with baskets from Tanner Giese and Hunter Nicholas.  After two baskets by the Prowlers, Crookston responded with five straight points from Giese to spark a run, and a few minutes later, Crookston trailed 59-45. “Tanner gave us another nice spark tonight,” said Coach Garmen. “He plays hard and did some nice things in the second half for us.” Thief River Falls picked up the defense and went on an 8-1 run to take a 67-46 lead.  Jack Garmen made two free throws with less than five minutes left to get within a 67-48 deficit.  Thief River Falls went to their bench the rest of the game and played everybody that dressed and won 82-56. “It was a tough game.  We did some good things in the second half, but we have to take better care of the ball and be more constant.”

Crookston drops to 3-17 on the year and will host Sacred Heart on Monday, the first of three games next week.  Thief River Falls improves to 14-6 on the year.
