UMC BASEBALL SWEEPS BEMIDJI STATE IN DOUBLEHEADER

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Golden Eagles Baseball team continues to play solid baseball as they swept Bemidji State University 8-3 and 15-1 in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader played at the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Baseball field in Crookston.

GAME ONE

FIRST INNING
Both teams were retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the first inning.

SECOND INNING
Bemidji State recorded the first hit of the game, and after a sacrifice and another single, they took a 1-0 lead.
UMC responded in the bottom of the inning when Teddy Giefer (Sr. Courtland) and Kodi Miller (Jr. Grand Rapids) hit back-to-back singles and a run scored on a Danny Wensloff (Sr. Roseau) ground out to tie the game at 1-1. 

THIRD INNING
BSU had a one-out triple before the next two batters were retired, and the runner was stranded at third base. UMC’s Kobe Senn (Soph. Fargo, ND) doubled and advanced to third on a Sawyer Satrom (Soph. Portland, ND) sacrifice and scored on a wild pitch. After a fly out, Josh Dykhoff (Soph. Wadena) hit a solo home run for a 3-1 lead through three innings.

FOURTH INNING
BSU led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to get within a 3-2 deficit.
UMC was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning.

FIFTH INNING
The first two BSU batters were retired before a single. The next Beaver batter grounded out.
UMC started off the bottom of the inning with a Mitch Goodwin (Sr. Prior Lake) double. He advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a Satrom double for a 4-2 lead. Satrom came into score on a wild pitch for a 5-2 lead. 

SIXTH INNING
BSU was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the inning. UMC recorded some insurance runs in the bottom of the inning. The first two batters were retired before Danny Wensloff doubled. Goodwin doubled to score a run. Sen tripled to score a run and came into score on an error for an 8-2 lead.

SEVENTH INNING
BSU’s first batter of the inning struck out before Ty Karger hit a solo home run to get within an 8-3 deficit, but Isaac Wensloff (Soph. Roseau) retired the next two batters to secure an 8-3 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.

GAME TWO –

FIRST INNING
The first two BSU batters struck out. The next batter walked and was caught stealing. UMC carried the momentum over from the first game into the second as Caden Headlee doubled, Dykhoff was hit by a pitch before UMC pulled off a double steal. The next batter popped out before Giefer singled to score two runs for a 2-0 lead. 

SECOND INNING
BSU was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the inning. UMC’s Goodwin doubled before Senn was hit by a pitch. Satrom singled to score a run and Headlee singled to score another run for a 4-0 lead.

THIRD INNING
BSU got on the board in the third inning with a single, a sacrifice bunt, and a wild pitch to get within a 4-1 deficit. UMC’s leadoff batter was retired before a single, a fielder’s choice, and a hit batter before the next batter grounded out, and UMC was retired and led 4-1.

FOURTH INNING
BSU started the inning with a walk before the next three batters were retired. UMC added more runs in the bottom of the inning when Satrom and Headlee singled, and Dykhoff doubled to score two runs for a 6-1 lead. After two outs, Cole Hebl (Fresh. Hillsboro, ND) doubled to score a run, and the Golden Eagles led 7-1. 

FIFTH INNING
BSU led the inning off with a walk for the second straight inning and the next three batters were retired.  UMC expanded its lead with a Goodwin double and a Senn single. Satrom reached on a fielder’s choice to score a run for an 8-1 lead. After another out, Dykhoff walked to load the bases. Jake Hjelle (Sr. East Grand Forks) walked to score a run, Giefer singled to score two runs for an 11-1 lead through five innings.

SIXTH INNING
BSU was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the inning. UMC added some more runs in the bottom of the inning when Danny Wensloff led off with a solo homerun for a 12-1 lead. Aaron Wenslofff (Fresh. Roseau) walked, Satrom singled, Angelo Pacyga (Soph. Sunfish Lake) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Americo Sculati (Soph. Golden Valley) walked to score a run. Hjelle was hit by a pitch to score another run. Another run scored on a wild pitch for a 15-1 lead. 

SEVENTH INNING
The first two BSU batters were retired. The next batter singled before the game ended with a Beaver strikeout and UMC won the game 15-1 to complete the sweep. 

UMC improves to 23-12 on the year and 17-8 in the NSIC and moves into fourth place in the NSIC and only a half-game behind third-place St. Cloud State. UMC will head to second-place Minnesota State Mankato for two games on Saturday and one game on Sunday. Bemidji State drops to 1-36 overall and 0-27 in the NSIC.
