The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles Softball team lost to Bemidji State 15-0 in the first game, but bounced back to win the second game 6-5 to earn a split in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader played in Crookston.
GAME ONE –
FIRST INNING
BSU struck early and often. They started with a single and a walk before a fly out. The next batter walked before a grand slam for a 4-0 lead. UMC’s Paige Shwaluk (Sr. Portage la Prairie, Manitoba) led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. After a ground out before Shaelyn Grant (Sr. Grand Junction, CO) was hit by a pitch, but the next two batters were retired.
SECOND INNING
BSU started the inning with a walk before back-to-back fielder’s choice, and the next batter lined out. UMC’s Reagan Emerick (Jr. Macomb, Ill) singled to lead off the bottom of the inning. After a pop-out and a strike-out, Emerick stole a second before another pop-out, and Bemidji State took a 4-0 lead.Â
THIRD INNING
BSU looked like they were going to add more runs in the third inning when they had a one-out walk and a single before the next two batters were retired.
UMC popped out before Curry singled, but the next two batters were retired.
FOURTH INNING
BSU led off the inning with a walk. After an out, BSU had two singles to score another run for a 5-0 lead. After an out, the next batter was hit by a pitch, followed by a double to score two runs. The next batter reached on an error, allowing two more runs to score for a 9-0 lead. The next Beaver hit a home run for an 11-0 lead. UMC’s Emerick had a one-out single before she was caught stealing, and the next batter struck out.
FIFTH INNING
BSU expanded their lead in the fifth inning with two singles and a three-run home run for a 14-0 lead. After an out, there were three singles to score another run for a 15-0 lead. UMC needed at least eight runs in the inning to keep the game going. Spencer singled, Ulrich singled but the next two batters were retired and Bemidji State cruised to a 15-0 victory.

GAME TWO –
FIRST INNING
Bemidji State had a one-out single before the next two batters were retired. UMC’s Paige Shwaluk walked to lead off the bottom of the inning. She stole second base and advanced to third base on a passed ball. Reagan Emerick singled to score a run for a 1-0 lead.
SECOND INNING
BSU had another one-out single. Bemidji State hit into a fielder’s choice, and the next batter popped out. UMC was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning.Â
THIRD INNING
Bemidji State was retired in 1-2-3 fashion. UMC had a big bottom of the inning when Maddie Shwaluk walked, Paige Shwaluk singled, and Curry reached on an error to score a run for a 2-0 lead. After a Reagan Emerick ground out that scored a run, Rayna French hit a blast over the left field fence for a 5-0 lead.Â
FOURTH INNING
Bemidji State started the fourth inning with three singles to score a run. After a ground out, they added three more singles while scoring three more runs to get within a 5-4 deficit. UMC answered in the bottom of the inning with a Paige Shwaluk single and stolen base. Curry walked and French singled to score a run for a 6-4 lead.
FIFTH INNING
Both teams were retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the fifth inning.Â
SIXTH INNING
Both teams were retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the sixth inning.
SEVENTH INNING
BSU’s first two batters grounded out. The next batters singled, another batter reached on an error before another single to score a run to get within a 6-5 deficit. The next batter grounded out, and UMC won the game 6-5 to earn the split.
UMC is now 12-32 on the year and 5-15 in the NSIC. BSU is now 11-32 overall and 5-15 in the NSIC.
