UMC Golden Eagles Hockey gets comeback win over North Dakota in first road game of the season

The UMC Golden Eagles Club Hockey team defeated the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks 4-2 in Grand Forks Friday evening. UMC is 3-0-0 and UND is 0-1-0.

FIRST PERIOD

UMC was able to seize momentum early in the period, firing off five shots in the first three minutes of play. The Golden Eagle Defense started strong too, with junior Alexander Bailey delivering a blow to prevent a North Dakota shot attempt in front of the net. The Golden Eagles would enter a power play with about 9 minutes to go in the period, and it was ended seconds later on a goal from UMC’s Jackson Fuller. UND tied the game on a goal from Andrew Riley, who found the loose puck by a skirmish around the net. UND took the lead with just under eight minutes to go in the 1st, as Luke Brennan added another goal. UMC was unable to capitalize on power play chances late in the first, and ended the period down a goal.

SECOND PERIOD

Quality goalkeeping from North Dakota kept the Hawks ahead for the first eight minutes of the period, but UMC’s Fox Dodds was able to tie the game with about 12 minutes left in the second. Mason Romfo found Dodds in the right faceoff circle for the assist. UND could not find an answer in the period, leaving the game tied at two apiece after two periods.

THIRD PERIOD

UMC carried their momentum from the second period into the third, using strong defense to prevent North Dakota from firing shots . Aiden McPhee of the Golden Eagles hit a long shot to give UMC the lead with just under 14 minutes left in the game, following a steal from Dylan Neubauer. A scrum led to multiple penalties and 3-on-3 hockey moments later. The defensive play of the game was made with around 11 minutes left, as Fox Dodds got in the way of what could have been a game tying shot from the Hawks. With about 6 minutes to go, UMC thought they added an insurance goal, but replay determined the puck was kicked into the net. Jackson Dodds was able to add a fourth goal for UMC in the closing seconds, which put the game away.

UMC and UND will face off again Saturday afternoon at 4:30.
