The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles Volleyball team remains in search of their first win in conference play following a 3-0 loss against Upper Iowa in an NSIC game played in Fayette, IA.
In the first set, Minnesota Crookston jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a pair of Peacock errors and a kill by Porsha Porath (Soph., Windom). Leading 4-2, Porath provided another kill before three straight Upper Iowa errors gave the hosts an 8-2 lead. Minnesota Crookston’s lead grew to 11-4 before the Peacocks won five straight points to pull within 11-9. UMC’s regained momentum and a 16-12 lead following a UIU attacking error before Upper Iowa won five-straight points to claim a 17-16 lead. UMC and Upper Iowa battled the rest of the set to a 21-21 tie before the Peacocks rattled off four straight points to win the set 25-21.
The second set proved far less competitive. Upper Iowa won six of the first seven points to take a 6-1 lead and never looked back. Minnesota Crookston pulled within 6-3, but the Peacocks were too much for the Golden Eagles as the home side cruised to a 25-12 win in the second set.
In the third set, Upper Iowa again used an early lead to put Minnesota Crookston our of striking distance. The Peacocks won eight of the first nine points taking an 8-1 lead. After a Porsha Porath kill brought the Golden Eagles within 8-2, Upper Iowa won six straight points taking a 14-2 lead closing out the sweep with a 25-16 third set win.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 2-9 on the season and 0-3 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles continue their road trip in Winona on Saturday when UMC takes on Winona State at 2 P.M. Upper Iowa improves to 9-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
