UMC Club Hockey rolls over Minnesota-Duluth

The University of Minnesota-Crookston men’s club hockey team saw two players achieve hat tricks as they defeated the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs 10-2 Friday night at the Crookston Sports Center. UMC outshot the Bulldogs 56-21 in the game.

FIRST PERIOD
The first period started with several minutes of clean, even hockey. Both teams had chances, but the goalkeepers for each side had a strong start. Neither offense made any waves until the Golden Eagles got started with a goal from Steven Musakranov. His goal gave UMC an early lead and momentum at the 12:10 mark. UMC quickly built on the lead with another goal, as Aiden Morelli hit from short range to make it 2-0. UMD had an answer within a minute, as Trenton Veenendaal scored to cut the Golden Eagle lead in half. Late in the period, a UMD penalty reignited the Golden Eagles, as Fox Dodds scored with 10 seconds left in the power play to put UMC Up 3-1 at the 17:38 mark. UMC committed a penalty to end the period, but the special teams held up as the first expired.

SECOND PERIOD
The Bulldogs had 43 seconds left in the power play to start the second period, but UMC killed the penalty. The Golden Eagles would pepper UMD goalkeeper Trygvee Lavallie over the next several possessions. At the 5:01 mark, Fox Dodds sent another puck through the net to make it 4-1 UMC. Logan Syrup and Tristan Morneault assisted Dodds with his second of the evening. UMC’s Zach Larson was penalized for cross checking a minute later, and the Bulldogs were able to score on the power play. Ethan Hanson put UMD back in it, as his goal cut the lead to 4-2. The Golden Eagles controlled the puck well the rest of the period, and they added another goal at the 18:29 mark. Dalston Kelly was fed by Mitchell Coleman to give UMC a 5-2 lead, which they would hold moving into the third period.

THIRD PERIOD
Goals came in bunches for the Golden Eagles in the third period. UMC would strike again just over a minute into the final frame, as Anthony Foster made the score 6-2. The offensive explosion continued with a goal from Tyler Lorenz . His first of the day came at the 3:56 mark and extended the UMC lead to 7-2. The Golden Eagles scored a third time in the period as Fox Dodds pulled off a hat trick. Dodds’ goal made it 8-2 about halfway through the period. UMC added a fourth goal one minute later, as Anthony Foster scored his second to make it 9-2. Larson was called for another penalty for UMC, but the Bulldogs could not find the net on the power play. Things got chippy in the final minutes after a scuffle in front of the net led to a Bulldog penalty with just over three minutes left in the contest. The Bulldogs killed the penalty, but UMC scored just seconds after the power play ended to make it 10-2. Anthony Foster scored, making him the second Golden Eagle to pull a hat trick in the game. The Bulldogs held for the final minute, as UMC won 10-2.

UMC is now 14-4 on the season. They’ll have a rematch with UMD tomorrow at noon at the Crookston Sports Center.
