UMC Hockey takes down UND, sweeping weekend doubleheader

The University of Minnesota-Crookston men’s club hockey team had no problem with the UND Fighting Hawks, as they took them down 8-2 on Saturday afternoon, one day after defeating them 12-2 on Friday evening.

FIRST PERIOD
It was a hot start for UMC, as they scored 68 seconds in off the stick of Colton Balcerak, giving UMC a 1-0 lead. UMC controlled puck possession throughout the game, barely allowing UND to get anything going. The Golden Eagles would get another goal a few minutes later, as Fox Dodds put one in to make it 2-0. Then after a tripping penalty, Jackson Dobbs cashed in on the power play, putting UMC up 3-0. They were not done, as they cashed one more in at 14:16 as Mason Romfo scored on a broken play to make it 4-0. UND was only held to six shots on goal, all of which were saved by Goody, and the lead was 4-0 at the first intermission.

SECOND PERIOD
UND came out firing in the second period, taking two quick shots, and the second one drew nylon, as Cole Deraney took one to the net one-handed to cut the lead down to 4-1. UMC didn’t wait too long to respond, however, as Dox Dodds struck again, putting the Golden Eagles up 5-1. After the 2 shots in the first 82 seconds got UND on the board for the first time, the Fighting Hawks only got two shots on goal for the remainder of the period, as the UMC offense continued to control the puck. They would then add two more goals, as Tyler Lorenz and Anthony Foster would each score one, and UMC would take a 7-1 lead into the second intermission.

THIRD PERIOD
The third period had a lot slower pace than the first two periods. Penalties continued to add up for UND, who lost their center of their second line in the second period due to a fighting disqualification. UMC would score first in the third period, as Braden Van De Kraats put one in bardown to put the Golden Eagles up 8-1. UND would get the last goal of the game, which diminished the lead to 8-2. but that would not be enought to spark a comeback, and the Golden Eagles would cruise ahead to an 8-2 victory.

UMC is now 4-0 on the season, while UND falls to 4-6.
