The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team wrapped up an impressive weekend with a region road win over Missouri Western 83-74 at the Civic Arena in St. Joseph, Missouri.
FIRST HALF –
UMC trailed 5-4 less than three minutes into the game before they went on a 19-0 run that was sparked by back-to-back three-pointers from Reed Miller and two more from Harrison Cleary. The run continued with a Cleary basket and Malcolm Cohen and Reed Miller added a three-pointer each and Cleary finished the run with a basket for a 23-5 lead with 12:17 left in the half. UMC continued their domination and built a 28-8 lead halfway through the half.
UMC’s stellar shooting continued the rest of the half and Missouri Western matched them the rest of the way and the Golden Eagles took a 47-29 lead into halftime.
UMC had the hot hand in the half making 18 of 33 shots at a 55 percent clip. They made nine of 14 three-pointers for 64 percent.
SECOND HALF –
Malcolm Cohen opened the second half with a three-pointer giving Minnesota Crookston a 50-29 lead. Leading 51-33, the Golden Eagles opened a 10-0 run with a lay-up from Brian Sitzmann capped off by a Chase Johnson dunk giving the Golden Eagles a 61-33 lead with 14:25 to play. Missouri Western responded with 12-4 run as the Griffins pulled within 65-45 wwith 9:31 to play. A quick 8-0 run trimmed the host’s deficit down to 67-53. With 4:41 to play Brian Sitzmann made two free-throws giving Minnesota Crookston a 75-61 lead. UMC’s offense went ice cold as Missouri Western scored nine-straight points while holding the Golden Eagles scoreless to pull within 75-70 with 1:33 to play. UMC made four straight free-throws to pull ahead 79-70 as Minnesota Crookston hung on for an 83-74 victory.
Minnesota Crookston improves to 1-1. The Golden Eagles will play in Kenosha, Wisconsin next weekend for the Wisconsin-Parkside Invitaional against Concordia-St. Paul at 5:00 P.M. on KROX with the Riverview Health Pregame Show starting at 4:30 P.M. Missouri Western falls to 1-1.
