The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Golden Eagles Club Hockey team was looking for a second straight win on Saturday afternoon over the Dakota State College of Bottineau Lumberjacks. UMC defeated the Lumberjacks last night 5-3, but today in the final game of the weekend series, it was Dakota College of Bottineau coming away with a 5-3 victory.
FIRST PERIOD –
Dakota College of Bottineau came out ready to play, scoring the opening goal of the game at the 3:25 mark of the first period on a Power Play after Josh Pieper (Sr. Baudette, Minn.) went to the penalty box for tripping. The Lumberjacks would add two more goals from Ian Amsbaugh, and JJ Adams to take a 3-0 lead into the second period. The Lumberjacks outshoot the Golden Eagles 24-4 in the first period. The four shots in the opening period for UMC came from Tyler Zahradka (Soph. Grand Forks, ND) Mitchell Coleman (Fr. Hatton, ND) Casey Kallock (Sr. Alvarado, Minn.), and Dylan Neubauer (Fr. Thompson, ND).
SECOND PERIOD –
UMC would go on the Power Play early in the second period and get one shot on goal, but come away empty-handed. The teams traded shots back and forth for the next few minutes until UMC would go back on the Power Play at the 7:57 mark of the period. This time the Golden Eagles would get two shots on goal during the man advantage, but once again come away with no goal. A few minutes later the Lumberjacks extended their lead with a goal from Zane McDonald with 7:47 remaining in the period. UMC would outshoot Dakota College of Bottineau 19-17 in the period, but trail 4-0 heading into the final 20 minutes of play.
THIRD PERIOD –
Dakota College of Bottineau added an early goal in the final period from Zach Veitch to make the score 5-0 and got nine straight shots on goal to start the period, before a shot from Dylan Borseth (Jr. Williston, ND) at the 7:27 mark of the period. UMC would finally get on the board, as Gunner Ferrier (Soph. Baudette, Minn.) would find the back of the net with 8:30 remaining in the game. Casey Kallock (Sr. Alvarado, Minn.), and Logan Syrup (Fr. Park River, ND) would be credited with the assists. UMC continued to fight and pursue a comeback, as a few minutes later at the 15:32 mark of the period, Nikolai Rajala (Fr. Coleraine, Minn.) would add another goal for the Golden Eagles, cutting Dakota College of Bottineau’s lead to 5-2. Casey Kallock (Sr. Alvarado, Minn.), and Dylan Borseth (Jr. Williston, ND) would earn the assists. The Golden Eagles still weren’t done, as Tristan Morneault (Soph. Dieppe, New Brunswick) added another goal with 1:50 remaining in the game to pull the Eagles within 2. Jackson Fuller (Fr. Bloomington, Minn.) earned an assist on the goal. The three goals weren’t enough, however, as the comeback fell just short. The Lumberjacks would hang on to win 5-3 while outshooting the Golden Eagles 60-37.
Braden Schmitz (Fr. Devils Lake, ND) suffered the loss in net for the Golden Eagles making 37 saves and allowing 4 goals. Jake Sumner (Soph. Alta Loma, CA) played goalie in the third period for UMC and made 18 saves while surrendering 1 goal. Matt Trulsen earned the win for the Lumberjacks.
UMC moves to 5-5-2 on the season with the loss and will be back in action next weekend with games in Williston, ND, against Williston State College on Saturday and Sunday. Dakota College of Bottineau improves to 7-5-1 with the win.
