UMC WOMEN’S SOCCER WINS FIRST MATCH OF THE SEASON OVER MINOT STATE

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Women’s Soccer team earned their first win of the season in their penultimate match of 2019 beating Minot State 3-2 in an NSIC match played at the UMC Soccer Field.

Minnesota Crookston opened the scoring 2:45 into the match when a pass from Maggie Peterson set up a Latafale Niumeitolu (Fr., Sandy, UT) goal giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. UMC doubled its advantage in the 14th minute after Maggie Peterson (Jr., Princeton) scored off an assist by Kiya Gere (Soph., Vancouver, WA) giving the Golden Eagles a 2-0 edge. Minot State cut their deficit in half before halftime when the Beavers Sofia Lewis (Jr., Minot, ND) scored trimming the visitor’s deficit down to 2-1 33:58 into the match.

Minnesota Crookston increased its lead back to two goals to start the second half. 5:44 after halftime, Vanessa Shelton (Jr., Tacoma, WA) scored from Maggie Peterson giving the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead. Minot State pulled back within one goal with 34:26 remaining after Sofia Lewis netter her second finish of the afternoon. Minot State continued near-constant pressure the rest of the match peppering UMC goalkeeper Athena DiMario Done (Jr., Windsor, Ontario) with shots. DiMario Done stopped 16 shots for the Golden Eagles, including 9 in the second half, to preserve Minnesota Crookston’s 3-2 victory.

Minnesota Crookston improves to 1-14 overall and 1-13 in NSIC play. The Golden Eagles conclude their season Friday when UMC host Bemidji State at 2:00 P.M. Minot State falls to 3-14 overall and 3-11 in conference games.
