The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) women’s soccer team continues its search for its first win in two years after falling 1-0 against St. Cloud State in an NSIC matchup played at the UMC Soccer Field.
St. Cloud State dominated possession throughout the match and limited Minnesota Crookston to just one-shot total in the match, a shot that was not on goal. The Huskies managed 22 shots in the match, 13 of which were on goal. However, Minnesota Crookston goalie Olivia Puttin (Jr., Rogers) delivered a strong performance for the Golden Eagles in net keeping a clean sheet in the first half which ended in a 0-0 tie. “We do more work on generating chances going forward in training than I probably ever have in my previous seasons here where we’ve had more success,” said UMC head coach Joe Alianiello. “I still think it starts with coming away with those 50-50 balls out of the air.” Early in the second half, St. Cloud State managed to break through. A corner kick sent in by Sara Magno (Sr., Franklin, WI) found Claire Shea (Fr., Excelsior, MN) who blasted a strike past Puttin into the net giving SCSU a 1-0 lead. Puttin managed 13 saves to keep the Golden Eagles within a goal the remainder of the match, but UMC failed to register a single shot in the second-half falling 1-0 to St. Cloud State. “I thought we limited them to some of the chances, the goal we gave up was a little bit soft with some missed markings there,” Alianiello summarized. “(Puttin) played well and made the saves she needed to have, which was good to see.”
The Golden Eagles fall to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in NSIC play. Minnesota Crookston heads on the road next weekend traveling to Winona State on Friday for a 3 p.m. kick-off followed by a Sunday matchup against Upper Iowa in Fayette at 11 a.m. St. Cloud State improves to 2-3-1.
