UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA CROOKSTON VOLLEYBALL SWEPT BY AUGUSTANA

Minnesota Crookston volleyball suffered their second sweep (25-18, 25-16, 25-18) of the weekend in a loss against the Augustana Vikings in an NSIC match played at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston.

Set One – Augustana buried a kill to open the match before a Porsha Porath (Soph., Windom) termination tied the opening set at 1-1. After an attacking error by the Vikings tied the set at 2-2, Augustana won three straight points taking a 5-2 lead. A service ace pushed the visitor’s advantage to 7-3. Minnesota Crookston rallied for two straight points with a kill by Deaira Gresham (Jr., Maplewood), followed by a Vikings’ attacking error brought UMC within 7-5. Another Augustana attacking error trimmed the Golden Eagles’ deficit down to 10-8. Porsha Porath slammed a spike pulling Minnesota Crookston within 16-14, but the Vikings won the next six points en route to a first set, 25-18 win. 

Set Two – Augustana jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the opening set before a serving error provided the Golden Eagles with their first point. A Deaira Gresham kill pulled Minnesota Crookston within 5-3. After a Kaitlin Sikkink (R-Sr., St. Charles) kill pulled the Golden Eagles within 10-6, Augustana took six straight points taking a 16-6 lead. Facing set point, Minnesota Crookston won five straight points pulling within 24-16, but a serving error ended the set with the Golden Eagles winning 25-16.

Set Three – Minnesota Crookston took a 3-1 lead in the third set after a kill from Sabrina Leuer (R-Sr., Hamel), and Augustana attacking error gave the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead. Augustana responded, winning the next six points taking a 7-3 lead. Minnesota Crookston cut their deficit down to 11-8 after an attacking error by the Vikings, but Augustana by winning five of the next seven points taking a 16-10 lead. Augustana continued to pull away the rest of the set, closing out the sweep with a 25-18 third set win.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 4-17 overall and 2-10 in conference play. The Golden Eagles return to the court Thursday when UMC hosts Bemidji State at 6:00 P.M. at Lysaker Gymnasium. Augustana improves to 14-8 overall and 7-6 in conference play.
