Crookston High School tennis has a history of outstanding doubles teams, including three state champions over the years, and the 2022 season is no different with Halle Winjum and Emma Gunderson receiving the #1 seed in this year’s Section 8A Individual tournament held at Courts Plus in Fargo, North Dakota.
Halle and Emma had a first-round bye and won their quarterfinal match on Friday in straight sets to set up a trip to the semi-finals on Saturday morning. Halle and Emma cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jessica Danielson and Erin Brandt of Roseau for a trip to the Section Championship.
Winjum and Gunderson took on Macy Goochey and Mickey Clark of Park Rapids and the Pirate duo continued their domination as they cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory to win the Section 8A Championship and advance to state. “Emma and Halle played very consistent tennis today. It started with great movement and energy throughout the 2 matches. It was also evident that they have been a part of big moments before,” said Pirate Coach Brekken. “They never coasted and dictated the points throughout. I am very proud of how they played in this tournament. Emma and Halle have outworked all of their opponents this year and they were rewarded with a section doubles championship. Well deserved.”
The State Girls Tennis individual tournament will be held on October 27 starting at 10:00 a.m. and will run through Friday. October 28 at Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
