Tuesday, July 14 was the first day to file to run for Crookston Mayor and Crookston City Council. Four people filed, with two filing to run for mayor and two for city council.
CROOKSTON MAYOR –
Current City Council member and vice-Mayor Morgan Hibma filed to run for mayor, along with Dave Rendon.
Hibma won re-election after running unopposed in 2024 for the City Council At-Large position. In July of 2023, Hibma was appointed to fill the term of At-Large City Councilmember and is currently serving on the Crookston Housing and Economic Development Authority and is the City Council representative on the Park and Rec Committee.
Rendon is a newcomer and hasn’t served on the city council or committees.
CITY COUNCIL WARD 4 –
Current Crookston City Councilman in Ward 4, Don Cavalier, has filed to run for re-election. Cavalier served on the Crookston Park Board for three years before winning election to Ward 4 in November of 2018, winning re-election in 2022 and seeking his third term on the council.
CITY COUNCIL AT-LARGE –
Wendy Ault has filed to run for re-election in her At-Large seat on the council. Ault was appointed to serve on the City Council as the Ward 5 representative in July of 2024. Ault ran for election in November of 2024 and lost to Derek Brekken. In August of 2025, Ault was sworn in to fill the vacancy in one of the At-Large Council seats and has been serving in that capacity since.
CITY COUNCIL WARD 2 –
Nobody filed on the first day of filing.
CITY COUNCIL WARD 6 –
Nobody filed on the first day of filing.
Filing closes July 28, 2026. Those interested in filing for Crookston Mayor and the four city council openings can file at Crookston City Hall (124 North Broadway) with a filing fee of $2. Candidates who file may withdraw from the election by 5:00 p.m. on July 30.
The primary election is August 11, and the General Election is November 3, 2026.
