#2 RANKED ETHAN BOLL WINS CHAMPIONSHIP AT JACKHAMMER TOURNEY IN PEQUOT LAKES

The Crookston Pirates Wrestlers, used five place winners including Ethan Boll as champion at 195 pounds, to take 10th out of 28 teams in the Jackhammer Tournament in Pequot Lakes this weekend. Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, ranked #2 in the state Class A team polls, led from start to finish and a 14 1/2 point win over the hosting Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus road crew with Thief River Falls third, Detroit Lakes was ninth followed by the Pirates. “Considering the high level of competition a top 10 finish is strong,” said Crookston head coach Wes Hanson, “we racked up a lot of team points early in the tournament and continued to wrestle well throughout the event. Special congrats to the guys that were able to find the podium in such a tough event.”
Boll, a junior who is ranked #2 in the state at 195 in Class A, had pins in all four of his matches with the first three at 36, 26 and 21 seconds!! He was tested a bit in the championship by Hayden Vandervoort of Hutchinson who is ranked #5 in Class AA at 195 pounds!!! “Ethan Boll wrestled an outstanding tournament and continued his dominant season. He had great movement on his feet and scored on some strong leg attacks. In the championship, he secured the first takedown and was physical in the top position which ultimately led to the fall. It was a very exciting way to finish the tournament for the Pirates.”  Boll improves to 14-0 on the year.

Carter Coauette took fourth at 145 pounds for the Pirates, Evin Trudeau at 106 pounds, and Ethan Bowman at 152 pounds both finished 6th and Hunter Knutson received an eighth-place medal for his work in the tournament. “Carter had an awesome week of wrestling and continues to improve. He won a big match in overtime Friday then lost a heartbreaker in overtime today. He showed some slick techniques from his feet resulting in many different takedowns,” said Hanson, “Evin Trudeau had a tremendous first day making his way to the semifinals. In his opening match he was trailing with short time left and hit a cradle to win at the buzzer. I’m very proud of how hard Evin competes. Ethan Bowman wrestled some really good matches and is a competitor. He wrestled well in the top position and is always looking to score points. Hunter Knutson had a very good tournament and showed some of his best wrestling. He had spurts of great wrestling in all positions which is very rewarding to see as a coach.”
The Pirates will now take a short Christmas break and then will wrestle in one of the bigger high school tournaments in the nation when they go to the Rumble on the Red Tournament at the Fargo Dome on December 29 and 30. “All the Pirates competed hard and did a good job of implementing what we’ve been practicing. Collectively we need to improve our mat wrestling and always be looking to score. Events like these are great team bonding experiences and I’m fortunate to coach a great group of hard-working student-athletes. We really enjoyed the event and look forward to getting back to work in preparation for the even bigger tournament in the Rumble on the Red at the FargoDome,” added coach Hanson.
