The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Hockey team had 17 players get at least one point in the 15-0 win over Detroit Lakes at the Crookston Sports Center. 17 of their 18 skaters had a point, and their goalie, Kailee Magsam, had a five-save shutout in the win! “It was nice to see everyone get into the point column,” said Crookston head coach Emily Meyer, “You have Paetyn (Strand) and Emmi (Trostad) get their first goals of their career, all four lines score and defensemen as well. All in all, a very good game for us.”
FIRST PERIOD
One plus for the Pirates is scoring early, this time 54 seconds into the game when Reese Swanson’s slap shot went top shelf to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Emma LaPlante, like Swanson, is on a scoring terror, getting her first of the period on rebound about halfway through the period. With about five minutes to go in the period, senior Jenna Seaver snared a rebound for a score, and a minute later, Parker Strand was coming into the Lakers zone and given a big area to shoot at away from the Lakers goalie and found the spot to make it 4-0 after a period. “We were a little sloppy in the period, throwing the puck around,” said Meyer, “we wanted to keep the puck in their zone, kept our composure, something we talked about in the locker room.”
SECOND PERIOD
Crookston started the second period with a goal 49 seconds into the period when Brekken Tull shot from near the slot area went off Detroit Lakes goalie Talyn Anderson, an eighth grader, blocker and deflected off into the net, and it was 5-0. Parker Strand, a sophomore, younger sister, freshman Paetyn Strand scored her first ever, and the Mayville-Portland (N.D.) product made it 6-0. “I’m not really sure how I scored, just found the puck in front and was able to get it in,” said Paetyn. Swanson would get two almost identical goals 18 seconds apart to make it 8-0. The first was Addie Fee was to the right of the Laker goal and spotted Swanson skating up the slot, hit her with the pass, and Swanson slapped a torpedo past Anderson. 18 seconds later, exactly the same, Fee to Swanson in the high slot, and a wrister made it 8-0 halfway through the period. Crookston would add three more, LaPlante got her second of the game on a rebound, Brynley Coleman and Taylor Field added goals, seven in all, which ties the Pirates record this year for most in a period, as it ties how many Crookston scored at International Falls earlier. In both periods, the Pirates scored less than a minute into the period, “Yeah, the goal Reese Swanson scored to start the game was a beautiful slap shot from the point, which she works a lot on,” said Meyer, “and it was a nice hard shot that Brekken took to score in the second period. We wanted to pass the puck more, and all the girls collectively came into the first-period locker room and stated that. They wanted to make sure they moved the puck around in the offensive zone, and I think we did a good job of setting that goal for themselves.”
THIRD PERIOD
Crookston started the third period, scoring just over a minute (1:08) into the period as Swanson scored her fourth of the game on a power play. It was her eighth goal in the last three games! Another defenseman, Kaylie Clauson, scored, followed by Emmi Trostad’s first career goal. “I was just in the right place, and Ava (Martin) got me the puck and slid it just past their goalie,” said the sophomore, who attends Sacred Heart and lives in East Grand Forks. Crookston is a cooperative of Mayville-Portland and Hatton, N.D., and now with Sacred Heart. Crookston’s last goal came with seven and a half minutes to go when LaPlante scored her third of the game. The freshman was all over the ice with high intensity every shift and was rewarded with another hat trick. LaPlante has seven goals in the last three Pirate games! Crookston put 63 shots on goal while Detroit Lakes mustered just five. The Pirates mainly played their third and fourth lines in the last eight minutes. “It’s good that those two got a lot of playing time,” said Coach Meyer, “Getting Emmi, Ava, and Paetyn more playing time and experience is what we want to do because they are the ones that will have to fill some roles going into the next season.”
Crookston is now 10-1-1 on the year and ranked #7 in the Minnesota Class A polls and will have a short break as they will be at the Warroad Holiday Classic Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, December 26, 27 & 28. Even with 15 goals this afternoon, Crookston will have to bring their A game three straight times, playing #2 ranked Proctor-Hermantown, Class AA Lakeville North, and then wrap it up with a rematch with #1 ranked Warroad!! “It will be a very good tournament to be part of to play against teams where we want to be. Going up there and competing will really show where we are at and how much we have to work on,” said Meyer, “It will be good practice for when we get to the playoffs.”
Detroit Lakes falls to 2-10 on the season and will be at the Herb Brooks Classic at the Blaine National Sports Center over the holiday break.
