SPORTS FEEVER – May 7, 2020

Welcome to another Pulitzer Prize worthy Sports Feever Column. Ummmmmm……Okay, maybe a best sports column written by a radio announcer named Chris Fee.  In all seriousness, we have another column full of information for you again this week.

KROX continues to play old broadcasts and they continue to be huge hits.  It is amazing how many people have been listening on the radio, online, on the app and on Alexa.

We have had a lot of requests to replay the 1980 State Football Championship game, the and 1995 State Baseball championship game because they missed it, or want to hear it again.  So we will do that next week.

We are also wondering if anybody has a copy of the 1998, 1999, and 2000 Pirate Football section championship games.  We are also looking for an audio recording of the 1988 Section 8A Boys Basketball championship game and the 1998 Section 8A Girls Basketball championship game.  If you have copies we will have them put on a flash drive and give you the recording back and the game on a flash drive as a thank you!

The schedule is below (all starting at 7:05 p.m.)-

Thursday – May 7 – Red Lake County Football vs Lake Park-Audubon (2013 Section 8A semi-finals)
Friday – May 8 – Crookston Central vs Mount St. Benedict Hockey (1980 game 6-5 OT)
Monday – May 11 – TBD
Tuesday – May 12 – TBD
Wednesday – May 13 – 1995 State Class A Baseball Championship – Crookston vs Brooklyn Center
Thursday – May 14 – Another One Bites the Dust 12 program (KROX program before the state football championship game in 1980)
Friday – May 15 – 1980 Football State Championship game – Crookston vs Pipestone

First, we will start with good news (maybe) –

Major League Baseball expects to offer a return-to-play proposal to the MLB Players Association within a week, as teams have begun to encourage players to prepare for a “spring” training that could begin in mid-June and a season that could start in early July, sources familiar with the discussions told ESPN.  Former Minnesota Twin, Trevor Plouffe first broke the news that one option has been spring training starting June 10 and the first game July 1.  While the information is great, it doesn’t mean it will happen.  The players will have to agree to a much lower salary because there won’t be fans and there are fewer games.  Player safety will also be a sticking point.  The “what if” a player test positive while playing?

I was sad to receive news that Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Pony Girls Basketball coach Jason Hanson has resigned from teaching elementary PE and coaching this week at Warren-Alvarado-Oslo.  Jason has accepted a new job position in his hometown of Newfolden.  “I will be running the Newfolden Insurance Agency,” said Hanson.  “I plan to watch my current junior daughter and 8th-grade son play for the next four years at WAO from the stands.  After they both graduate, I plan to get back into coaching again.”
Jason made the tough decision to leave because it was a good financial opportunity for his family and he is proud of what the Pony Girls Basketball program had done over the past three years.  “I’m proud of the improvement we made over the past three seasons I was here.  The year before I took over the team was 3-20.  My first year we went 11-15, then 17-9 and finally 22-4 this past season,” said Hanson.  “It was fun to see the program develop each year.  I also think my daughter, Kylie will enjoy playing her senior season without being the coach’s kid.”

The University of North Dakota has received some good publicity thanks to the most famous alum, Phil Jackson and the ESPN 10 episode documentary The Last Dance.  Phil Jackson lived in Walsh Hall along with the likes of Zach Parise and others.  When going to UND basketball camp back in the day, it was well documented that when staying in Walsh Hall, Phil Jackson once lived there.

If you haven’t taken in The Last Dance, it is well done and an interesting watch.  I am 43 and the late 80’s and early to mid 90’s were the hay day of the NBA.  Everybody would sit down and watch the NBA on NBC with the famous theme song created by John Tesh.  Yes, John Tesh.  Marv Albert was the main TV announcer at the time and was on the call of every game.

Red Lake County Central’s Jenna Pahlen recently signed a National Letter of Intent to accept an athletic scholarship to play volleyball at Minot State University.

Several area hockey players were drafted in the USHL draft this week –

East Grand Forks’ Jaksen Panzer was picked in the second round with the 22 nd pick by the Sioux Falls Stampede.  Trey Ausmus was picked in Round 3 with pick 42 by the Madison Capitols.

Warroad’s Carson Reed was picked in Round 7 with the 93 pick by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

Roseau High School graduate and current University of North Dakota Women’s Basketball player Kacie Borowicz was named the UND Women’s athletics freshman of the year this week.  She averaged 7.2 points per game and had a season-high of 23 points on January 26.

The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball program announced the signing of one of the top junior college prospects in the region with the addition of Jake Dykhoff, a six-foot 195-pound transfer from Minnesota State Community and Technical College. The Big Ten Conference announced today that it will extend the previously announced suspension of all organized team activities through June 1, 2020, and will re-evaluate again at that time.

This is an additional measure to the previously announced cancellation of all-conference and non-conference competitions through the end of the academic year, including spring sports that compete beyond the academic year. The Conference also has previously announced a moratorium on all on- and off-campus recruiting activities for the foreseeable future.

The Big Ten Conference will continue to use this time to work with the appropriate medical experts and institutional leadership to determine next steps relative to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The main priority of the Big Ten Conference is to ensure the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty, fans, and media as we continue to monitor all developing and relevant information on the COVID-19 virus.

A Blonde goes over to her friend’s house wearing a T.G.I.F. T-shirt.
