Highland Elementary 5th and 6th-grade students competed in the regional Math Masters of Minnesota Challenge in Bemidji.
Students competing were Asher Wieland, Nathan Pahlen, Hamsini Chanda, Eva Gosse, Keziah Mason, Abby Lane, Peyton Demarais, Jayde Uttermark, Sylvia Christensen, and Mackenzie Ness.
These students competed individually and as teams on eight sets of mathematical problems in this competition for a total of 325 problems. They competed against 179 other students from 36 teams.
The 5th-grade team placed 7th overall.
Eva Gosse placed 14th in the Individual Division.
Keziah Mason placed 10th in the Fact Division and 9th in the Individual Division.
Math Masters of Minnesota provides competitions in mathematics for thousands of fifth- and sixth-grade students. The competition is designed to promote excellence in thinking skills pertaining to mathematics and was founded upon research concerning the characteristics of mathematically gifted people.
The purpose of Math Masters is to challenge students to use critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities and give recognition for academic effort and achievement.
