UMC WOMEN’S SOCCER SHUT OUT BY UND IN SEASON-OPENING EXHIBITION MATCH

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles women’s soccer team was dominated on both sides of the ball, falling to the Fighting Hawks of the University of North Dakota by a score of 3-0 at Bronson Field in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

FIRST HALF
From the opening kick, UND began to assert their dominance on the field. They pushed the narrative offensively, drawing two corner kicks in the first three minutes, capped off by a goal scored by Kaylie Fowler in the 4th minute to put the Fighting Hawks ahead.
The Fighting Hawks continued their barrage, taking twenty-four shots in the first half alone. For North Dakota, the offense was not the only thing doing well, as the defense prevented the Golden Eagles from taking a single shot in the first half. The offense capped off more aggressive play with another goal, this time in the 32nd minute by Amelia Loeffler. The Fighting Hawks took that 2-0 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF
After UMC goalkeeper Emma Stempien allowed two goals and recorded eight saves in the first half, Golden Eagles coach Neil Mancktelow decided to make a swap, bringing in Jordan Metz to guard the net in the second half.
The Golden Eagles made the switch looking to provide a spark to their defense, which worked because after UND was able to get twenty-four shots off in the first half, the Golden Eagles defense held the Fighting Hawks to twelve in the second half. Metz and the defense did well in the first 30:00 of the second half, but the Fighting Hawks were able to deliver a final blow with a goal in the 77th minute by Jessica Machovec. The defense for UND continued to thwart any offense from the Golden Eagles, stopping them from taking a single shot throughout the entire game, cruising to a 3-0 win.

UMC falls to 0-1-0 after their first exhibition match of the year. UND improves to 1-0-2, staying undefeated to open up the year.
