The Stephen-Argyle Storm came from behind to win the last two sets to beat the Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Ponies 3-2 (27-25, 14-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-13) in a Section 8A Volleyball matchup in Warren.
FIRST SET
WAO got things going quickly, scoring the first 4 points of the set, but the Storm found a response immediately, scoring 7 in a row to take a 7-4 lead, capped off by a block from Ayla Woinarowicz. The Ponies needed an answer, and they scored the next 3 in a row to take a 10-7 lead, only for the Storm to come back to tie it at 10. This roller coaster theme would continue throughout the remainder of the set, with no one getting a lead larger than 3. The Ponies seemed to have the last laugh, as a Macey Boe kill made it 24-22, but the Storm surprised the Ponies, ending the set on a 5-1 run to steal the set 27-25.
SECOND SET
The second set started back-and-forth just like the first set, but after the set was tied at 5, the Ponies settled in and played their best volleyball of the match. Markelle Peterson stepped up, getting a block and a kill to help the Ponies go up 9-5, but the Storm again answered to tie the set at 10. However, that set in motion a big run for the Ponies. Kills by Macey Boe and Taylor Wentz sparked an 8-0 run to go up 18-10, and that allowed them to cruise through the rest of the set, ending it on a 7-4 run with the help of two more Macey Boe kills, giving the Ponies a 25-14 set win, tying the match at a set apiece.
THIRD SET
The set started with positive Ponies momentum, as they scored 4 of the first 6 points, but the Storm responded by scoring 5 in a row, going up 7-4. However, this one would once again be a roller coaster set, as the Ponies responded by scoring seven in a row, capped off by a Kenley Marquis kill, one of many in the match, to put the Ponies up 11-7. They held the lead at 11-10, and then surged one more time, going on a 5-0 run to take a 16-10 lead. However, this built up some pent-up frustration in the Storm, and they let it out with their longest run of the match at 9-0, suddenly taking a 19-16 lead. WAO would respond again, and would tie the match at 21. The Storm would get two points to make it 23-21, but the Ponies caught them napping, and a Lola Linder kill sparked a sudden 4-0 run, ending the third set at 25-23 Ponies, putting them 2-1.
FOURTH SET
As set 4 started up, the Storm got off to a sharp start, taking a 4-1 lead early in the set. However, the Ponies responded, once again continuing the theme of back-and-forth play, getting a Kenley Marquis ace to go up 9-5. The Storm has yet another answer, tying the set at 9 and 11, before Ayla Woinarowicz began to take over. She had nine kills and eight blocks in the match, and 3 of those blocks came in a 5-1 run for the Storm, putting them up 16-12. Then, the Ponies scored 5 in a row again, going up 17-16. The teams alternated points until 21-20, where the Storm finally pulled away, ending the set on a 5-0 to take the 4th set 25-21, forcing a 5th set.
FIFTH SET
Stephen-Argyle seemed to finally take the rest of the life out of WAO, as they used their momentum to open up a quick 6-3 lead in set 5. Emily Marquis was the difference maker in this set; she recorded four kills, two aces, and a block to lead the Storm. The Ponies tied the match at 7, but then the Storm rallied again, going on a 6-2 run to take a 13-9 lead. WAO wasn’t done, as an ace by Taylor Wentz started a 4-0 run to tie the set at 13. However, that would be all the Ponies had left, as an Alexis Labine ace ended things at 15-13, giving the Storm the win 3-2.
