The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team exploded offensively by scoring 5 goals in the second period en route to a 7-2 rout of the Detroit Lakes Lakers at the Crookston Sports Center on Saturday night, during the second game of Pirate Hockey Fights Cancer.
FIRST PERIOD
The game started relatively slow, and it stayed that way, as for the first 11 minutes of the game, there were a total of 5 shots on goal. Madi Abrams made 2 saves in this span, including a very impressive sliding save on an attempted wraparound by the Lakers. However, at 11:34, the second wraparound attempt worked out brilliantly for the Lakers, as Presley Nelson cashed in on a wide open net, and the Lakers took a 1-0 lead. That lead would only last 38 seconds, though, as Adley Vigness shot a puck off the heel of Dl defenseman Dalanie Nelson, which then bounced into the net to even the issue at 1. Then, 33 seconds later, Vigness took off down the ice on her own and scored unassisted, giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead in a 1:11 span. Each team ended up with 1 more shot on goal for the remainder of the period, so the Pirates were able to maintain their 2-1 advantage into the intermission.
SECOND PERIOD
The second period turned out to be an offensive explosion for the Pirates, as though they were only held to 9 shots, they scored on 5 of them. The first one came at 3:13, when Emma LaPlante split two defenders and scored bardown to increase the lead to 3-1. Then, Rilynn Aubol committed an elbowing minor, and Adley Vigness attempted to clear the puck, but it ended up going under the pad of Solberg, giving the Pirates a shorthanded goal and a 4-1 lead. After that, DL committed a penalty, and Vigness continued her phenomenal day by scoring her 4th goal of the game on the power play, and the Pirates surged to a 5-1 lead. Neither team then got a shot on goal for the next 5 minutes until another DL penalty put the Pirates on the power play again, and this time a Keely Garrett shot was deflected in by Christina Hershey for her first varsity goal, putting the Pirates up 6-1. The Pirates would get their final goal of the period at 13:46, as Vigness delivered a beautiful full-ice pass to LaPlante, who buried it to put the Pirates up 7-1. The Pirates held the Lakers to two shots on goal, and took the 7-1 lead into the 3rd period.
THIRD PERIOD
The third period started in running time, and that slowed the offensive pace down even more than it already was, where there were only 6 shots on goal in the entire period. Both the Pirates and Lakers each got a power play, but both teams did not record a shot on goal in either one. The final shot on goal of the game came from Sophie Burnside, who scored on a rebound to cut the lead down to 7-2. However, the Lakers only recorded 10 shots on goal in the game, and this allowed the Pirates to roll on and win by a score of 7-2.
Crookston improves to 6-16 on the year and will host Roseau on Monday night.
