The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Tennis team went 1-2 at the Alexandria Quadrangular on Saturday, defeating Osakis 5-2 before falling to Alexandria 7-0 and to Detroit Lakes 6-1.
CROOKSTON VS OSAKIS –
The best results for the Pirates on Saturday came against their first opponent in Osakis. All four singles players won for Crookston. The lineups changed often throughout the day, but for this one, Lauren Tull was in first singles, and she only dropped two games en route to a dominant 6-2, 6-0 victory. Both Groven sisters took part in this duel as well; Nora Groven won a tight first set before dominating the second set, and Brigit Groven did the inverse, controlling the first set before eking out a tight 7-5 win, allowing both sisters to claim straight-set victories. The last singles win came from freshman standout Haddie Halland; she dropped the first set in a tiebreak before coming back to win the match in a super tiebreak. Pirate head coach Brianne Ellison sang Halland’s praises. “Haddie loves her long matches and going into every possible tiebreaker she can” said Ellison, “she pulls through and it’s amazing to watch.”
In doubles, the only Pirate win came from first doubles, where Ella Capistran and Kaylen Bedard won each set by a 6-2 score. The second doubles pair of Avery Mathews and Katie Seaver just fell short of forcing a super tiebreak, and the third doubles pair of Sylvia Christensen and Tegan Fanfulik were defeated in straight sets.

CROOKSTON VS ALEXANDRIA –
The second match of the day was against Alexandria, and unfortunately, the Pirates were unable to get much going. No Pirate won more than two games in their respective match, and Brigit Groven in third singles was the only Pirate to win a game in both sets played. After this rough match, the Pirates set their sights on Detroit Lakes, who they just played the day before, losing 6-1 on Friday in Wadena.

CROOKSTON VS DETROIT LAKES-
The third match of the day against the Lakers had much closer results. In singles, the only victory came from, once again, Haddie Halland, winning in straight sets after a second-set tiebreak victory. The lineup changed significantly for this match, so Nora Groven and Katie Seaver lept up to singles, but unfortunately fell in straight sets. Ella Capistran also made the jump and played in second singles, and played in the closest match of the day. After dropping the first set, Capistran won the second set in a tiebreak, and in a third set super tiebreak, a set of wild rallies ultimately ended in Capistran falling 11-9 in the set.
The closest doubles match was the first doubles pair of Lauren Tull and Kaylen Bedard. They won the first set before dropping the second and then losing the super tiebreak 10-5. Both second and third doubles would lose in straight sets. Pirate coach Brianne Ellison was proud of the way the girls played in both the winning and losing moments. “Overall I feel like the girls, especially today, did really well.” Ellison also added, “Even though we didn’t win all of the matches they played like they did. They put up a good fight in all of their matches which shows all of their work ethics.”
