The Crookston Pirates boys‘ soccer team had two pen nets and multiple shots on goal but could not find the back of the net in a 5-0 loss to the Mesabi East Giants on Senior Day. The Mesabi East School District is made up of Aurora, Hoyt Lakes, Biwabik, and the surrounding areas of Lakeland, Embarrass, Palo, and Markham.
FIRST HALF –
The first few minutes of the half consisted of shots for both sides. Colton Osborn made an early save, and Masen Lessard got past the goaltender and had a wide open net, but unfortunately hit the post. That seems to drastically change momentum, and the Giants were able to score three goals in 4:45. Two of the goal were put in by Gage Benz, and all of a sudden, the Giants held a 3-0 lead. With just over ten minutes left, after a couple solid Colton Osborn saves, Caden Perry hit a great shot, but Giant goalkeeper Griffin Roen pinned the ball against the goal post to make the save, keeping the Pirates off the board. Mesabi East then turned it into the third Gage Benz goal, increasing the lead to 4-0. It looked like the half would end at that score, but with 10 seconds left, Mesabi East got the ball all the way down the field to Nick Stark, who put the ball in the net right as the horn sounded. The officials counted the goal, sending the game to halftime at a 5-0 lead for the Giants.
