The predicted storm for Western Minnesota and North Dakota is causing problems for a lot of schools, farmers, and many others. Let’s hope the meteorologists are wrong!!!
I was supposed to be in Duluth Tuesday night through Thursday morning for the Minnesota Broadcasters Association Annual meetings. I went to Duluth Tuesday night and left at 2:30 on Wednesday afternoon and cruised home to do the Crookston High School football game at 7:00 p.m.
I am on the board of directors and was elected Vice-Chair of the board for 2020 and will be Chairman of the Board in 2021. I was honored to be nominated by our outgoing chair. I have been on the board for three years and it has been one of the more rewarding and educating experiences of my life. It would have been nice to stay for the entire conference in beautiful Duluth, but I did get to bring my Daughter Alyssa (a senior at UMD) and her roommate out to eat at Tavern on the Hill so that was nice to visit her in Duluth for only the second time in four years!!!! (We are terrible parents – but busy parents!!)
Many have asked why I came back and didn’t stay in Duluth. My response is simple. My dad carried every Pirate football game except for one (my sister’s wedding) after Jerry Dahlberg retired from calling Pirate football. I have done EVERY Pirate football game since my dad has retired. Only three people have called a Pirate football game in 50 years!!!!! My dad and I take pride in our job and even though it was far from my best work, I love bringing people the game. Plus we have football on Thursday, Volleyball Friday and another football game on Saturday. So I wouldn’t want Leo doing three football games in four days. Football takes a lot of time to prep….it is by far the hardest to prep for, especially in high school.

The University of Minnesota Crookston has moved all three of their remaining home games to the Alerus Center in Grand Forks. The move is because of field conditions (or lack thereof) at Ed Widseth Field.

ALL THE PREVIEWS WERE BEFORE THE GAMES ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT!!!!
We have two games left in the high school football regular season and many of the seeds are still up for grabs.
SECTION 8AA
Section 8AA’s top seed is wrapped up and Barnesville will be the top seed. What happens after that is a toss-up for almost every remaining seed.
#2 Pelican Rapids has games with Hawley and Polk County West. They could lose both of those game and the could win both. I think if Pelican Rapids wins their final two games, they are guaranteed a #2 seed.
#3 Warroad has games with Walker-H-A and Frazee left on the schedule. Again both teams will be tough to beat, but both are beatable so we can’t even guess what they will do in the final two games. If they win the last two games, they will be the third seed at worst.
#4 Frazee plays Wadena-Deer Creek and Warroad. They should win one of the game and the Warroad game is a 50/50 game. They will likely be a 3-5 seed.
#5 Crookston plays Breckenridge and Otter Tail Central. Crookston could be anywhere from a 3 to a 6 seed depending on what happens. If they win both and Warroad and Frazee only win one, I would think Crookston can move to #3. If Crookston loses both, they could drop to a six seed.
#6 United North Central has games with Rothsay and Bertha-Hewitt. They would need two wins and Crookston or Frazee would have to have two losses to move up and out of the sixth seed (I believe). But, with two losses, they could drop to seventh if Bagley wins one of their last two games.
#7 Bagley is in the same boat, but I predict they will win their last two games with games against Cass Lake-Bena and Wadena-Deer Creek. Both programs are struggling mightily and it should be two wins, which could move them up to a sixth seed, but that is about as high as they can go.
#8 Hawley has two games left with Pelican Rapids and West Central Area. I think Hawley can win both of the games, but they could easily lose both games too. The highest they could move up is 5th I am thinking.
Team (QRF) | Section | Overall |
1. Barnesville (58.4) | 2-0 | 6-0 |
2. Pelican Rapids (38.2) | 1-0 | 4-2 |
3. Warroad (29.8) | 1-0 | 4-2 |
4. Frazee (24.5) | 1-1 | 2-4 |
5. Crookston (22.9) | 1-1 | 2-4 |
6. United N. Central (14.1) | 0-0 | 2-4 |
7. Bagley (13.6) | 0-2 | 2-4 |
8. Hawley (9.0) | 0-2 | 0-6 |

SECTION 8A FOOTBALL
Section 8A pretty much has the seeds wrapped up 1-5 if things go like we expect them.
#1 Ada-Borup/West has games against Red Lake County and Walker-H-A and with two wins they are guaranteed the top seed. They own wins over Mahnomen/Waubun and Polk County West already and have the tie-breaker with those two teams. With two losses they would drop to second and possibly third.
#2 Mahnomen/Waubun has Lake Park-Audubon and Pine River Backus. One would think they will win both games, but the way this season has gone, there are no gimmie wins. I am thinking they will be the two seed.
#3 Polk County West has games with Fosston and Pelican Rapids. They should win the Fosston game and the Pelican Rapids game could be an interesting one. If Polk County West takes care of the ball, they might have two more wins. Polk County West should be the third seed.
#4 Red Lake County will play Ada-Borup and Breckenridge. So they have two very tough games before playoffs. Two wins would give them some big points, but I don’t know if that would move them up any, but it would be huge for the confidence going into the postseason. Two losses won’t hurt them either because they are likely the fourth seed no matter what.
#5 Cass Lake-Bena has games with Bagley and Underwood. They will be an underdog in both games and even with two wins they might be the fifth seed.
#6 Red Lake and Fosston are tied in the QRF. Red Lake plays Pine River-Backus and Lake Park-Audubon and it will be tough to win either of those games. Fosston has games with Polk County West and New York Mills. They likely won’t win those two games so it will come down to QRF and it could go to who has a better QRF as both teams would be 0-8 on the year.
Team (QRF) | Section | Overall |
1. Ada-Borup/West (47.6) | 3-0 | 5-1 |
2. Mahnomen/Waubun (46.9) | 3-1 | 5-1 |
3. Polk County West (37.3) | 2-2 | 4-2 |
4. Red Lake County (24.5) | 3-2 | 4-2 |
5. Cass Lake-Bena (11.2) | 1-2 | 1-5 |
6. Red Lake (6.3) | 0-2 | 0-6 |
6. Fosston (6.3) | 0-3 | 0-6 |

SECTION 8 9-MAN
The Section 8 9-Man top seed is solidified, but the rest of the teams are fighting for their seed.
#1 North Central (Northome/Kelliher/Bigfork) once again has crushed their opponents by an average of 43 to 6. They have games with Hill City/Northland and South Ridge. They will be the top seed unless they lose the last two games and Stephen-Argyle wins the last two.
#2 Stephen-Argyle has games with Kittson County Central and Goodridge-Grygla left. The game on Thursday against Kittson County Central could be the battle for the second seed. Whoever wins will likely be the second seed in the playoffs. But two losses to end the year could drop the Storm down to the fifth seed, depending on what happens with the other teams.
#3 Kittson County Central has two big games left with Stephen-Argyle and Warren-Alvarado-Oslo. If KCC wins both they will be at worst, a second seed and possibly a top seed. If they lose both, they could drop down to the fifth seed. Both games are big for the Bearcats.
#4 Warren-Alvarado-Oslo has the Northern Freeze and Kittson County Central. If the Ponies win both games they would likely be the second or third seed as they hold the tie-breaker Stephen-Argyle.
#5 Badger-Greenbush-Middle River has games with Goodridge/Grygla and Clearbrook-Gonvick and I would think they could win both games and possibly move up to a 2 or 3 seed depending on what happens with the other teams. I am guessing a 3 or 4 seed is where they will end up.
#6 Goodridge-Grygla will have BGMR and Stephen-Argyle so they will have a couple of tough games to end the regular season. A 6th seed looks like it might be a good bet. At worst a seven seed.
#7 Lake of the Woods has games with Bigfork and Ely left and to be honest, I don’t know anything about the two. If they win both games they will likely be the sixth seed. They don’t have to worry about dropping lower than seventh.
#8 Northern Freeze has games with Warren-Alvarado-Oslo and Laporte. It will tough to beat the Ponies this week, but a win against Laporte is possible and that would be a good way to go into playoffs.
Team (QRF) | Section | Overall |
1. North Central (33.6) | 1-0 | 6-0 |
2. Stephen-Argyle (22.8) | 2-1 | 4-2 |
3. Kittson County Central (19.3) | 2-1 | 4-2 |
4. Warren-A-O (18.6) | 2-1 | 3-3 |
5. Badger-Greenbush-MR (18.3) | 3-1 | 3-3 |
6. Goodridge-Grygla (12.5) | 1-2 | 3-3 |
7. Lake of the Woods (10.1) | 0-1 | 2-4 |
8. Northern Freeze (5.5) | 0-4 | 0-6 |

SECTION 6 9-MAN
The Section 6 9-Man seeds are still up for grabs in a few spots, including the top spot.
#1 Win-E-Mac has games with Norman County East/UH and Blackduck. Both games will be tough games, but if they win both they will be the top seed because they have the tie-breaker for the top seed. If they lose both, they could drop to the second seed (if Fertile-Beltrami wins both).
#2 Fertile-Beltrami has games with Park Christian and Nevis. They will be two solid games and if the Falcons can win both they and Win-E-Mac loses one, they could take over the top seed even though Win-E-Mac beat them earlier this year. With two wins they are either 1 or 2.
#3 Blackduck has games with Nevis and Win-E-Mac. With two wins they are guaranteed to be the third seed. I am not sure if they can move up to the second seed, but I don’t think it is out of the realm of possibility.
#4 Nevis has games against Blackduck and Fertile-Beltrami. If they win both they would be for sure the third seed and I don’t know if they could make enough to get the second seed, but it would be close.
#5 Norman County East/UH has games with Win-E-Mac and Park Christian. They are slightly ahead of Park Christian so the game in the final week could be for the fifth seed.
#6 Park Christian has games with Fertile-Beltrami and Norman County East/UH. The final week will be a playoff game of sorts with the winner of the game getting the fifth seed.
#7 Clearbrook-Gonvick has games with Laporte and Badger-Greenbush-Middle River. The game against Laporte will be a big one with both teams looking for their first win of the season. The winner will be the seventh seed and the loser will be the eighth seed.
#7 Laporte has games with Clearbrook-Gonvick and the Northern Freeze. Laporte has a good shot at finishing the regular season with two wins as they play two teams that don’t have a win yet. That would be a great way to end the regular season.
Team (QRF) | Section | Overall |
1. Win-E-Mac (32.8) | 4-0 | 6-0 |
2. Fertile-Beltrami (30.1) | 3-1 | 5-1 |
3. Blackduck (22.0) | 3-1 | 5-1 |
4. Nevis (19.8) | 4-1 | 4-2 |
5. Norman County East/UH (16.8) | 0-3 | 2-4 |
6. Park Christian (15.7) | 2-2 | 3-3 |
7. Clearbrook-Gonvick (5.3) | 0-4 | 0-6 |
8. Laporte (5.3) | 0-4 | 0-6 |

SECTION 8AAA
The Section 8AA standings have spread out a bit, as far as QRF goes, and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton took over the top spot with an impressive win over Perham a couple of weeks ago and had a great effort in a 20-14 loss to Detroit Lakes last week.
#1 DGF has games against Park Rapids and East Grand Forks and the Rebels should be able to win those and end the season with a 6-0 section record and the top seed.
#2 Perham has a big game this week with Pequot Lakes and will have another tough game to end the season at Detroit Lakes.
#3 Pequot Lakes has a big game with Perham this week for a battle for the second seed and they wrap up the regular season with games against Perham and Fergus Falls. Both games are big games for seeding purposes and if they win both, a second seed is likely.
#4 Fergus Falls has games with Detroit Lakes and Pequot Lakes. The DL game will be a tough game to win and the last game of the regular season will be an important game and kind of a playoff game.
#5 East Grand Forks will host Thief River Falls this week and DGF next week. If I was a betting man, I would think EGF goes 1-1 in the final two games and will likely stay in the fifth spot.
#6 Roseau has games against Barnesville and Pillager. Two tough opponents and it is unlikely they win one and will stay in the sixth spot.
#7 Thief River Falls plays East Grand Forks and ends the regular season with Park Rapids for a fight to get out of last place. Whoever wins the game will be the seventh seed.
#8 Park Rapids has games with DGF and Thief River Falls. The first game will be tough, but the last game of the regular season is a battle for the seventh seed.
Team (QRF) | Section | Overall |
1. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (63.0) | 4-0 | 5-1 |
2. Perham (52.5) | 4-1 | 5-1 |
3. Pequot Lakes (45.2) | 3-1 | 4-2 |
4. Fergus Falls (34.0) | 3-2 | 3-3 |
5. East Grand Forks (26.3) | 1-3 | 2-4 |
6. Roseau (23.0) | 0-0 | 2-4 |
7. Thief River Falls (13.5) | 0-4 | 0-6 |
8. Park Rapids (11.0) | 0-4 | 0-6 |

We have been hearing of some current and former Division 1 athletes getting big checks in the mail as part of a class-action lawsuit with the NCAA. The money is from a 208.7 million dollar settlement of one part of a lawsuit against the NCAA and 11 major conferences concerning the association’s athlete-compensation limits. The settlement has over 43,000 athletes in Bowl Subdivision football and Division 1 men’s and women’s basketball. The overall average of the settlement check is $3,800 and we have heard of some former UND Basketball players receiving two to three times more than that.
– More than 8,100 checks are for amounts between $5,000 and $10,000.
– Nearly 1,300 are for amounts between $10,000 and $20,000.
– There are 14 for $20,000 or more, including one for a little over $36,000.
