ALBANY USES HOT SHOOTING TO DEFEAT DGF REBELS BOY’S BASKETBALL IN STATE TOURNEY SEMIS

The Albany Huskies shot well, and the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels were cold as the Huskies picked up a 79-64 win in the Class AA Minnesota High School Boy’s Basketball State Tournament semi-finals at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis.

FIRST HALF –
Drew Sheeley opened the scoring for the Rebels with a steal and layup to give DGF a 2-0 lead, but Albany quickly came back with four straight points for their first lead of the game at 4-2. Owen Leach got his first points on a four-point play to put the Rebels in front 6-4 with 16:23 left in the half. Leach also had a four-point play in the Rebels last game. Senior Tysen Gerads led Albany on a huge run of 14-2 as Albany took an 18-8 lead. The Rebels put an end to the run with Grant Anderson converting on a layup, and after an Albany layup, Cayson Bergee would hit a three for DGF cutting the deficit to 19-13 with 6:30 remaining in the half. Albany answered back with a three, but the Rebels scored the next five points on a Drew Sheeley layup and another Cayson Bergee three-pointer, giving Albany just a slight lead at 22-18 with 5:19 left in the first half. Albany would put together another run to go in front 31-21 with two minutes left, and it was a pivotal moment in the half for the Rebels. Senior Owen Leach would come down the court and lay one in for the Rebels, and after an Albany free throw, Grant Anderson would cash a jump shot making it 32-25 Huskies with forty seconds left. Albany would split a pair of free throws the next time down, but Owen Leach would draw a foul with just six seconds left in the half to put himself at the free throw line. Leach would hit both making it 33-27 Albany but the half still wasn’t over. Sophomore guard for the Huskies Zeke Austin would go coast to coast and draw a foul right before the end of the half, putting him back to the free throw line where he would make one of two to give Albany a 34-27 lead at the halftime break. The Huskies were able to take the lead at the halftime break thanks to shooting 54% from the field and outrebounding Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 17-9. The Rebels shot just 4-15 from three-point land in the opening eighteen minutes and were led by senior Owen Leach with 10 points. Tysen Gerads did most of the damage for the Huskies scoring 15 first half points.

SECOND HALF –
It was a disastrous start to the second half for the Rebels as the Huskies continued to shoot the ball well. Albany started the half on a 9-1 run to take a 43-28 lead and force a Rebels timeout with 14:06 left in the game. If the Rebels were to have any chance they would need to get things going offensively and fast. The Rebels were able to get their offense going with Owen Leach hitting a layup and Drew Sheeley scoring seven straight points. The problem was the Rebels weren’t getting any stops and with another Albany three plus an and one, the Huskies were in front 52-37 with 11:03 remaining. After that Owen Leach would convert his second four-point play of the night and the Rebels would pull within eleven trailing 52-41. Every time the Rebels answered, however, the Huskies strung together a run, and by the play of Tysen Gerads and Zeke Austin, Albany was able to extend their lead to 61-45 with a 9-4 run. DGF would take a timeout to talk things over with 6:42 left in the game. The Rebels would cut the deficit back down to twelve points thanks to four points from Owen Leach and two free throws from Drew Sheeley making the score 63-51 with 4:39 remaining in the game. The game never got below single digits again, and the Huskies knocked down their free throws and took care of the ball securing a 79-64 win over the Rebels.

Dilworth Glyndon-Felton falls to 25-7 and will now play tomorrow at noon for third place against Minnehaha Academy. The game will be played at Concordia University in St. Paul and we will have the game on KROX Radio.
Albany improves to 31-1 and will now play Holy Family Catholic for the Class AA State Championship tomorrow afternoon.
